McCarter's New Chief, Sarah Rasmussen, Is a Burst of Energy


I have been sitting here for quite a while, staring out the window at a pond through a soft and very dreary rain. I have been trying to think of the best way to describe Sarah Rasmussen, the new artistic director of Princeton’s McCarter Theatre, who took over the reins of leadership in the middle of the pandemic. Should I say she is a new Shakespearean scholar, an impressionist of the drama, a philosophical innovator?
“Little Girl Blue” Honors Nina Simone


A new musical is now playing at New World Stages. Little Girl Blue is a retrospective of American singer, songwriter, arranger, pianist, and civil rights activist Nina Simone. The production informs, entertains, and engages the audience. The excellent direction of this show is by Devanand Janki. Before opening in NY, this show premiered at George Street Playhouse, New Brunswick, NJ in February 2019. In summer 2021, it was part of the Goodspeed by the River series.

(RED BANK, NJ) -- Two River Theater is presenting the world premiere of The Hombres by playwright Tony Meneses now through April 10. Directed by Annie Tippe, this is a play that looks at the complexity, diversity and intimacy of male friendship through the lens of machismo culture, The Hombres was co-commissioned by Two River Theater and the NJPAC Stage Exchange, a program of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and New Jersey Theatre Alliance. The cast includes Victor Cruz (Pedro), Noah Gaynor (Miles), Eddie Gutierrez (Julián), Gerardo Rodriguez (Héctor) and Jon Rua (Beto).
Lewis Center for the Arts presents "The Hello Girls"


(PRINCETON, NJ) -- The Lewis Center for the Arts’ Program in Theater at Princeton University presents The Hello Girls, with music and lyrics by Peter Mills and book by Peters Mills and Cara Reichel, both Princeton alumni. From New York to Paris, from ragtime to jazz, The Hello Girls chronicles the story of America’s first women soldiers. These intrepid heroines served as telephone operators on the front lines, helping turn the tide of World War I. They then returned home to fight a decades-long battle for equality and recognition, paving the way for future generations.
Centenary Stage Company To Hold A Talk-Back With Playwright Ruth Kirschner On April 1st


(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) -- As the World Premiere of Whippoorwill approaches, Centenary Stage Company has announced a talk-back with the playwright, Ruth Kirschner, after the 8:00pm performance on April 1st. This talk-back gives audience members the opportunity to ask the playwright questions and gain a better understanding of Whippoorwill and the process of writing a script to creating a fully realized show.
Premiere Stages at Kean University Announces Semi-Finalists for 2022 Play Festival


(UNION, NJ) -- Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, has announced the 2022 Premiere Play Festival Semi-Finalists. The Play Festival panel and literary staff reviewed 655 submissions before choosing the 35 Semi-Finalists. From those 35 Semi-Finalists, four Finalists will be chosen in early April for public readings. Those readings will be held April 21-24, 2022 at Liberty Hall Museum (1003 Morris Avenue, Union, NJ 07083). One finalist will be awarded a full production in Premiere Stages’ 2023 season.
RVCC's Arts & Design Department presents "Spring Studio '22"


(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- Raritan Valley Community College’s Arts & Design department will present a student theatre production, Spring Studio ’22, Wednesday-Saturday, April 13-16, at 7:00pm, in the Welpe Theatre at the College’s Branchburg campus. The studio production features a cast of 20 in lively scenes full of humor, all unified by their studio setting. The bill includes three superb offerings by RVCC Professor of Theatre Dennis Russo.

Tab Benoit Comes to SOPAC


(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) -- Blues guitarist-vocalist and storyteller extraordinaire, Tab Benoit, has launched an ambitious 2022 Spring-Summer National Tour with the Whiskey Bayou Revue.  Locally, Tab performs in concert at SOPAC (South Orange Performing Arts Center), in the Jennifer & Tony Leitner Performance Hall on Sunday, April 3 at 7:30pm.

New Jersey's own George Clinton - the "Godfather of Funk" returned to the Garden State on March 18th for a performance at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) with Parliament-Funkadelic and a celebration of his 80th birthday. Photographer John Posada was on hand to take some shots.

Light of Day WinterFest 2022 took place in March after being postponed in January due to Covid. The shows use music to raise money and awareness in its continuing battle to defeat Parkinson’s disease and its related illnesses ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) within our lifetime. There are few opportunities to see as many musicians play in the area as with the annual LOD shows and photographer John Posada wanted to convey that with these photos.

Arts Council of Princeton presents 10th Annual Cabernet Cabaret featuring Sarah Donner & Friends

Lighthouse International Film Society to screen "Nest 38" and "Broken Wings"


(SHIP BOTTOM, NJ) - The Lighthouse International Film Society will screen a documentary double feature of Nest 38 and Broken Wings on Saturday, April 9th at 7:00pm. The screenings take place at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences (120 Long Beach Blvd) in Loveladies, NJ. Admission is $10 online or $12 at the door.  The event is free for LIF Society Members.

Paul Robeson Galleries presents ZOOM discussion with Four Artists to Watch

Middletown Arts Center Hosts Art Exhibition "Toby Gowing, Illustrations"


(MIDDLETOWN, NJ) -- The Middletown Arts Center presents the work of book illustrator and Middletown resident, Toby Gowing, from April 1–27, 2022. The exhibition, Toby Gowing, Illustrations, will feature nearly 50 of the artist’s illustrations spanning from 1980 to 2010, as well as several of her still life paintings. 
Miriam Beerman - Rediscover Opens at James Yarosh Associates Gallery


(HOLMDEL, NJ) -- When acclaimed painter Miriam Beerman passed away in February 2022 at the age of 98, she left a six-decade legacy of humanist expressionist works that are included in the permanent collections of over 60 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney, LACMA, Phillips Collection, National Gallery of Art and Victoria & Albert Museum.
