Nimbus Arts Center Hosts "International Women's Stories" on Friday

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- Jersey City's 2020-2022 Poet Laureate, Susan Justiniano | RescuePoetix joins with Ameerah Shabazz-Bilal, and Nimbus Arts Center for International Women's Stories to be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 from 7:00pm-10:00pm at Nimbus Arts Center, Jersey City, NJ. This is an in-person event. All guests must be masked and provide proof of vaccination or negative covid test within 72 hours. International Women's Stories celebrates with featured performers and an open mic segment – limited to 10 open mic participants. This is a ticketed event, and donations are appreciated! No one will be turned away: Pay what you want. 

International Women's Stories taps into multi-disciplinary artists throughout the realms of Visual, Literary and Performance Arts. Women identified artists feature from various parts of New Jersey to share their stories during Women's History Month with the backdrop of the surrealist exhibition, The Exquisite Corpse Show, curated by Tina Maneca at the The Firmament Gallery, Nimbus Arts Center, 329 Warren St., Jersey City, NJ

Co-curated and co-hosted by award winning poets Susan Justiniano | RescuePoetix and Ameerah Shabazz-Bilal | When Women Speak, the featured lineup includes Crystal (Davis) Letters (Jersey City NJ), Leloni Lopez (Newark NJ), Dayana Poulard (Maplewood NJ) and Mwikali Words (Elizabeth NJ). Each of these dynamic powerhouse poets will voice their stories, in their own words, their own way.

Ameerah Shabazz-Bilal is an award-winning poet from Newark, NJ. She is the 2021 recipient of the Maria Mazziotti Gillan Literary Service Award and the 2022 recipient of The Every Kinda Lady - ‘Her Story' award for poetry.

Ameerah has a unique talent for telling stories through poetry and Visual Arts. She is a Poet, Visual Artist, Teacher, Photographer and the founder/facilitator of “When Women Speak” and “When People Speak”. The Author/Illustrator of “Breathing Through Concrete” with works featured in publications: “Every Kinda Lady and Her Sister Pages volumes I and II ” ,“Philadelphia Says:Black Lives Matter”, “Womb of the Violet II”, “American Muslim Journal”, “Soup Can” Magazine Issue 2, “Life in Quarantine - Global Pandemic” and The PEPSI - Poetry Anthology. 

She has to her credit the advocacy and support of women in the arts and the publishing of over 300 students. Her mantra is: “Poetry isn't poetry unless it's Spoken...Word”.



Susan Justiniano, is the first Puerto Rican woman Poet Laureate of Jersey City, NJ. As a globally published and performing poet, she established her professional artist brand, RescuePoetix™ in Jersey City. She is an arts advocate and has been deeply involved in the arts community since 2006. 

As an Arts Advocate, she performs, organizes, and facilitates workshops extensively throughout New Jersey and globally. As Poet Laureate of Jersey City (2020-2022), Susan has developed a body of work that is community focused and spotlights artists through the rich linguistic diversity that poetry makes space for, connecting literary, performing, and visual arts to bring together collaborative multi genre and multimedia projects.  

RescuePoetix™ poetry is motivational, uplifting, and empowering; designed to connect on a level far deeper than what the eye can perceive. Spinning verses in Spanish and English, her words weave stories of strength, growth, experience, and love in its many evolving forms.



Nimbus Arts Center is located at 329 Warren Street in Jersey City, New Jersey. Nimbus uses the power of the arts to impact individuals and communities. As Jersey City's vibrant, anchor arts organization invested in equity, diversity, and excellence, Nimbus weaves together dance company, arts center, school, and community programming. 

Founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Samuel Pott and based in Jersey City, Nimbus' renowned contemporary dance company performs on tour nationally and throughout the greater New Jersey/New York region, impacting 16,000 people annually. Community engagement initiatives serve over 7,000 children annually through in-school, movement-based programs. Nimbus presents and produces the annual Acadia Dance Festival at the Criterion Theater in Bar Harbor, Maine. In September 2020, Nimbus opened the Nimbus Arts Center, a 14,900 square foot center with theater, gallery, and studio spaces that is the largest dance-based arts center in the State of New Jersey. Aligning with Nimbus' mission to wield the arts as a medium for broad impact to our diverse community, the new Center provides a home base for Nimbus Dance, the School of Nimbus, resident partner organizations Segunda Quimbamba, Shehnaaz Dance Academy, and A Sound Start, as well as Nimbus' own visual and performing arts presenting activities including the outdoor summer Nimbus Arts Festival, and Latin American Music Series: Música y Ritmos.
