SSAAM presents "Meet Sojourner Truth" on Zoom this Tuesday for Black History Month


(SKILLMAN, NJ) -- The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum, central New Jersey’s only Black history museum, presents “Meet Sojourner Truth,” a live theatrical performance about the life of activist, abolitionist, and former slave Sojourner Truth, at 6:00pm (Eastern time) this Tuesday, February 8, on Zoom. <
Kelsey Theatre Presents "Popcorn Falls"


(WEST WINDSOR, NJ) -- Maurer Productions OnStage presents the zany comedy “Popcorn Falls,” weekends February 18 through February 27, 2022 at the Kelsey Theatre on the West Windsor campus of Mercer County Community College (MCCC), 1200 Old Trenton Road. Written by award-winning playwright and actor James Hindman, “Popcorn Falls” is the story of a small town with a dried up tourist attraction. <
Inis Nua Theatre presents American premiere of "Finding Fassbender"


(PHILADELPHIA, PA) -- Inis Nua Theatre presents the American Premiere of Finding Fassbender, a solo show from actor turned playwright Lydia Larson. When Eve gets a promotion, she moves to London in the hopes of having a glamorous big city life. But soon she discovers that being one in 9 million can be pretty lonely. Feeling at her lowest, a lifeline comes to Eve in the form of a letter for her apartment’s former tenant – Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender. Now all Eve has to do is return this letter to the rightful owner! The production will be directed by Barrymore Award-nominated director and Inis Nua Founder and Artistic Director Tom Reing. Previews begin Wednesday, February 9, with opening night on Friday, February 11. The show runs through February 27, 2022 for a total of 15 performances. All performances will take place at the Louis Bluver Theatre at the Drake, 302 South Hicks Street. Tickets are $15 - $30.   <
Dunbar Rep presents "Minstrel Show, or the Lynching of William Brown" at Middletown Arts Center


(MIDDLETOWN, NJ) -- The Middletown Arts Center, in collaboration with the Dunbar Repertory Company, celebrates Black History Month with the presentation of the Minstrel Show, or the Lynching of William Brown on February 18-20 and February 25-27. Written by Max Sparber and directed by Darrell Lawrence Willis, Sr., this compelling production re-creates the horrific, true story of the 1919 lynching of a jailed black man, William Brown, as seen through the eyes of a couple of traveling, fictional song-and-dance men. The production stars Joseph G. Taylor and Arthur Gregory Pugh.  <
The Theater League of Clifton postpones "Meshuggah-Nuns!" Until 2023


(CLIFTON, NJ) -- The Theater League of Clifton regrets that it has to postpone the dinner/theater production of Meshuggah-Nuns!, which was to be staged at Mario’s Restaurant in Clifton during February and March.  Unfortunately, due to concerns regarding Covid-19 and scheduling conflicts with the restaurant and the stage and acting crews, the show will not be performed again until 2023. <

Outpost in the Burbs Presents Hollis Brown


(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Outpost in the Burbs presents Hollis Brown on February 26, 2022 at 8:00pm. This concert will take place at the First Congregational Church, 40 S. Fullerton Avenue in Montclair. The band's latest new album, In The Aftermath (Mascot Label Group/Cool Green Recordings), is the deliciously depraved outcome of an all-night rock n’ roll riot. The Queens, New York-based quintet escaped to the Poconos to record with a few handles of whiskey, and, in one 24-hour session, ran down The Rolling Stone’s seminal first album of all originals, 1966’s Aftermath. Tracked live in the studio with minimal overdubs, In The Aftermath is potent proof the five-piece group is one of the last great American rock n’ roll bands. The band is expected to play songs from this album and from throughout their catalog. <

Remember Jones to Perform "Bat Out Of Hell" Live at Axelrod PAC


(DEAL PARK, NJ) -- Remember Jones will celebrate the sound of Meat Loaf and the music of Jim Steinman with three performances of Bat Out of Hell Live at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center from April 29 to May 1. Memory Builds the Monument screens at the Spring 2022 New Jersey Film Festival on February 11


Memory Builds the Monument, which is playing at the New Jersey Film Festival on Friday, February 11 via Video on Demand for 24 hours, shines a spotlight on Club Matinee, a performance theater in Houston’s historic 5th Ward that housed acts such as B.B. King, James Brown, and Sam Cooke. As a haven that blossomed with black talent during an era of segregation, Club Matinee was a place abundant in memories, liveliness, and fantastic music. This high-spirited place of assembly was a source of joy for the black community and a primer place for congregation and socialization. Attendees could dine, chat, and enjoy the music of the greatest black talent to their heart’s desire. Despite the southern backdrop of segregation, the monument that was Club Matinee was a cultural beacon for residents and visitors alike.  <

The Inspirational Documentary Letters2Maybe screens at the Spring 2022 New Jersey Film Festival on February 6


Letters2Maybe is an inspirational, integrative film which touches on refugees experiences with their new life in America. Unfortunately, there aren’t any positives these refugees have experienced. One of the interviewee’s, Nancy, even states that coming to America is a “trap” and it’s better for your soul to die on your own land, rather than in a foreign country. This film touches on the metaphorical letter to our world on how we can better articulate a message touching on power, opportunity, and justice. Throughout the duration of the film, the screen floods with birds flying away. My personal take on this is, flying to “freedom” and/or the birds portray a way to send a message to their loved ones. Many of these people aren’t able to travel back to their birth country and there is a level of frustration that comes along with this misfortune. Sharim is able to grab the views of many refugees in diverse communities, so then they are able to have a voice and vocalize their opinions. <
