Our Favorite Stories In Theatre - Freedom Rider
New Jersey Stage published its 25,000th story in December 2021. As the site approached the milestone, we posed the question on social media as how we should celebrate. One response was to highlight our favorite stories from over the years. We liked this idea, but could not narrow things down to just 25 favorites so we will present a favorite each day from different genres. Every Tuesday we feature one of our favorite stories in theatre. Since today is the start of Black History Month, we are featuring an interview with Ricardo Khan on the play Freedom Rider.
Count Basie Center for the Arts and Phoenix Productions Announce Merger
(RED BANK, NJ) -- On February 1, 2022, the Count Basie Center for the Arts and Red Bank-based Phoenix Productions announced their intentions to merge, allowing the community theatre company to officially become part of the organization which has hosted its productions for more than 30 years.

Alto Saxophonist Mark Gross: Inspired by Cannonball Adderley and Jimmy Heath
Cannonball Adderley was alto saxophonist Mark Gross’ “biggest influence,” so when he was hired by Cannonball’s younger brother, trumpeter Nat Adderley, in 1995 (20 years after Cannonball’s death), it was “one of the highlights of my career. I came recommended to him,” Gross recalled, “but he had not heard me play. We flew to Europe, and I’m thinking we are going to rehearse. We get to the hotel, we have dinner, and he says, ‘See everybody tomorrow.’”
Spotlight on VAYA
VAYA sees themselves as more of a spirit - a way to express yourself through music, colors, and performance - than a traditional band. Based in Toronto, their first concert was in the summer of 2017. Their name is strongly connected to the white wolf spirit.
Five Songs That Define Your Life: Little King
This is an ongoing series here. We are interested in finding out from artists about the five songs that define their life. It's a different type of list than just of favorite songs. We're looking for songs that are deeply personal to the person, songs that motivate them or describe their life in some way. They may wind up being the person's favorite songs, but the interesting part is trying to narrow a list down to just five. It's harder to do than it sounds and it provides a good look into each person. Little King gives his list here.
Andy Fediw of Kinderhook Releases Debut Solo Album "Unfinished Business"
Andy Fediw, co-founder of one of Kinderhook (one of New Jersey’s most enduring Americana bands), is stepping out on his own with his debut solo release Unfinished Business. The eight-song collection by the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is available through his website, including in CD format, and is available on all digital platforms.

It Was Fifty Years Ago Today: A Tribute to The Beatles starring Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Badfinger featuring Joey Molland, Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, Denny Laine (founding member of The Moody Blues and Wings), and Jason Scheff (Chicago’s lead singer from 1985-2016)! These legendary artists will be performing their hits plus selected songs from The Beatles’ albums “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver”. The tour comes to Montclair (The Wellmont Theater), Atlantic City (Sound Waves at Hard Rock Hotel), and Red Bank (Count Basie Center for the Arts) in March.

"Who We Are: A Chronicle Of Racism In America" To Have Free Screening In Red Bank On February 15th
(RED BANK, NJ) -- The Count Basie Center for the Arts Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force, in conjunction with Monmouth University’s Social Justice Academy and Intercultural Center, will host a special screening of the new Sony Pictures Classics documentary Who We Are: A Chronicle Of Racism In America on Tuesday, February 15 at 7:00pm in the Count Basie Center’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre, 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank.
Centenary University to Host Film Talk with Stephen Whitty and Ken Mandel on February 3rd
(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) -- Centenary University will be hosting a Film Talk with award-winning film critic Stephen Whitty and Emmy Award winning and Academy Award nominated filmmaker Ken Mandel. This talk will take place on Thursday, February 3 at 6:00pm in the Kutz Black Box Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center located on the campus of Centenary University in Hackettstown, NJ. The Film Talk is free to attend and open to the public. Seating is limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.

Josef (Fabian Kruger) is an alcoholic man carrying out a solitary sentence of his own choosing – his eyes display tremendous sorrow of a terrible past as he spends his days drinking and his hands quiver as he incoherently rambles to assure himself that he’s doing well. Interrupting these string of nights is the arrival of Josef’s half sister Karin, a single mother working tirelessly to provide for her four year old daughter and who comes bearing the news of their mother’s death. With Karin struggling with her finances and nowhere else to turn to, Josef reluctantly agrees to let them move into the same building, maintaining a cautious distance from his new neighbors.

Hoboken Museum hosts Book Release and Signing For “The Hidden Faces of Hoboken” on February 6th
(HOBOKEN, NJ) -- The Hoboken Historical Museum will host a book release and signing for “The Hidden Faces of Hoboken: A Finder’s Guide to the Architectural Heads in Hoboken” by photographer and graphic designer McKevin Shaughnessy.
