Portraits are paintings that look back. We know that the sitter doesn't actually see us, but part of us — the part that secretly believes in ghosts — suspects that there's an essence in the frame that is oriented outward. As anybody who has ever ventured into a family picture gallery could tell you, that can be uncomfortable. Art appreciators will sometimes say that the eyes of great portraits follow viewers around the room. They're less upfront about whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. Do they chase you like the admiring glances of a lover, or do they stick with you like a guilty conscience?

Gateway Playhouse to Showcase a Weekend full of One Acts

(SOMERS POINT, NJ) -- Gateway Playhouse will host "Party of One (Acts)" from July 11-13, 2025. The one-act plays are a series of vignettes taken from Tracy Wells' A Trip to the Moon, with each story set during the Summer of '69, specifically around the moon landing.








Add It Up: Violent Femmes to Stack Their Hits During Fall 2025 Tour

NJPAC presents a Spring Season of Jazz

(NEWARK, NJ) -- New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents a Spring Season of Jazz with free monthly jazz jams at Clement's Place and two special concert events inside the Victoria Theater. This series, running from September through June, is co-presented by NJPAC's Jazz Advisory Committee and Rutgers University–Newark's Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS). Immerse yourself in the relaxing sounds of jazz music that stimulate the players’ and listeners' minds.

PBS' Independent Lens Launches 20th Season of Free Pop-Up Screening Series in Teaneck and Nationwide

(TEANECK, NJ) -- The award-winning PBS documentary series, INDEPENDENT LENS, presents the launch of the upcoming season of Indie Lens Pop-Up in partnership with the Teaneck International Film Festival and the Puffin Cultural Forum. The season kicks-off on February 4, 2026 with The Librarians and continues through May. The series is free for all but sign up is required.
