(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Vanguard Theater Company's production of Spring Awakening has been playing to standing ovations. The musical follows a group of teenagers taking an emotional journey through the turbulence of adolescence. Originally written in 1891, Spring Awakening is set in a provincial town in 19th century Germany that fails its youth by censoring books, silencing dissent, and readily using corporal punishment. Against all obstacles, the teens answer by creating a community of love, support, hope, and change. Performances run Thursdays through Sundays now through July 16, 2023.

On Saturday, July 15, Newark will come alive with the largest celebration of African culture in New Jersey. This free event — proudly sponsored by Newark Parks and Newark Happening — aims to bridge the gap between New Jersey and Africa. Attendees will enjoy a day filled with performances by globally renowned Afrobeat artists, captivating visual art installations, engaging activities, tasty traditional African food from local vendors and a bustling marketplace featuring Black-owned businesses. It takes place in Military Park from 10:00am to 8:00pm.

An angsty rock musical adaptation of the seminal play about the trials and tribulations of growing up, Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion that is illuminating and unforgettable. All shows will take place beginning at 8:00pm in JSAC's Palaia Theater. The season lineup includes Willie Nile, John Gorka, Dan Bern, Catie Curtis and Band, Stephen Kellogg, Abbie Gardner, Heather Maloney and Band, and Kim Richey. As they have done in prior years, artists from the Asbury Park music scene will open many of the shows.

Loss, we've all suffered it. Some of us more than others,some less and still yet there are those of us who've not had loss of any significance to this point. Loss, like anything else, is directly related to perspective. What may seem like a huge loss to one, is insignificant to another. People pass away, bad days do the same, they fade into the night or disappear at the bottom of one's favorite drink until they are swept away by the morning's sunrise and things are new. Some loss stays a bit longer, adding scars to our bodies until they become topographical maps of memories; reminders of what not to do or what we didn't do or should've done.
