Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...5/19/22

by Danny Coleman - published 2022-05-19

"I released an album in 2021 but I haven't been able to tour so we are doing it now. The album title is "The Ghost and the Wall" and it's 10-tracks; I was in Philadelphia and New York; I did three nights at City Winery. I have a trio with a guy named Danny Black who plays acoustic guitar and some lap steel who is from Philadelphia and a lovely woman named Allie Moss who is from New Jersey singing backup harmonies,” said Joshua Radin in a recent discussion about his latest release, his songwriting, the recording process and being on stage.

Makin Waves with Asbury Park African-American Music Project: Preserving History, Celebrating Community, Cementing Future

by Bob Makin - published 2022-05-18

Around Memorial Day Weekend 1970 when I was 5 years old, my grandmother won me yet another prize at a wheel of chance on the Asbury Park Boardwalk: a copy of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” my first big-boy LP. A few weeks later, civil unrest broke out throughout the city, and I didn’t step foot onto the AP boardwalk for a decade!

PHOTOS from Lotus at Union Transfer

by Chris Paul - published 2022-05-18

Lotus performed two nights (May 13-14) at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, PA and photographer Chris Paul was on hand to grab some photos. The band, which has performed at festivals like Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Ultra, and Rothbury, has steadily built a devote fan base through steady touring.  They've also crafted a unique musical style outside of simple genre limitations. Equal parts instrumental post-rock and electronic dance, the band’s distinguishing feature is the ability to maintain a decidedly unique musical voice and remain current while bucking passing trends.

A Special Reading of "Whittier," New Docudrama by TyLie Shider, Inaugural Playwright in ArtYard Artist Residency Program

by Christopher Benincasa, JerseyArts.com - published 2022-05-16

This Saturday, May 21, theatergoers are invited to join ArtYard in Frenchtown for a reading of Whittier, a new docudrama by TyLie Shider. Whittier is a neighborhood in Minneapolis, close to where the murder of George Floyd took place. Shider’s new play follows residents of Whittier grappling with that tragedy, as well as the stresses of life during the lockdown of 2020. A playwright, poet, and journalist, TyLie Shider is also the inaugural playwright in ArtYard’s artist residency program, curated by Deonté Griffin-Quick. We spoke with Shider, Quick, and director Andrew Binger about bringing Whittier to the stage.
