Washington's Steampunk Fair Captures the Imagination

originally published: 05/01/2022

(WASHINGTON, NJ) -- Downtown Washington is taking a step back in time...or is it the future? The 2nd Annual Washington Rock ‘n’ Roll and Steampunk Fair on Saturday, May 21st combines the steam-powered Victorian Era energy of the classic science fiction genre with a punk and rock ‘n’ roll sound that makes for an amazing day of retro-futuristic fun.

Themed vendors, live music, and activities are planned on Saturday, May 21 from 10:00am-5:00pm in and around the town’s Veteran's Park at 44 East Washington Avenue (Route 57), Washington (Warren County), in the center of the Downtown. The eclectic music lineup includes punk-inspired bands to set the mood, including national recording artists, the Slambovian Circus of Dreams, A Halo Called Fred and Psych-A-Billy.

The Steampunk Fair brings a scene out of a movie set with attendees dressed in "steampunk clothing and gear", unique games including teapot races, and other assorted activities. But you don't need to "dress the part" to attend. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy this family-friendly event.

“Last year, which was our inaugural Steampunk Fair and the first of its kind in the county, a lot of people were surprised at how much fun it was," said Melanie Thiel, Executive Director of the Washington Business Improvement District. “It's not your typical event in part because it has an attendee participation aspect to it. At similar events around the country getting dressed up is part of the fun - but it is not essential to someone just being here for the fun of it.”

It is expected that over 50 vendors will participate this year. Some or those confirmed already are The Roguish Rabbit, featuring handmade and steampunk, gothic, and geeky inspired jewelry, wings, hats, goggles, and other accessories; Hallowed Elements with chain mail jewelry; Do Right Brothers with steampunk sunglasses; and a tarot card reader.
