The Arts Institute of Middlesex County Events in August 2024

(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ) -- Throughout the month of August, the Arts Institute of Middlesex County is showcasing a vibrant array of arts and culture events, exhibitions, and shows. These events are free and open to the public.

August’s event highlights include:

* Master Gardener Butterfly House Grand Opening: Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County is hosting a series of community events at their “hoop house,” where Master Gardeners have nurtured butterflies throughout the growing season. Visitors can learn about butterfly host plants and participate in capturing butterflies for the house. The event will take place every Saturday and Sunday in August from 10 am to noon.

* New Brunswick Heart Festival: The State Theatre New Jersey, in collaboration with the New Brunswick Cultural Center, NBPAC, and Above Art Studios, is presenting the New Brunswick Heart Festival on Saturday, August 10, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the State Theatre New Jersey. The event will feature a variety of outdoor, family-friendly activities, including dance performances, live music, dance classes for children, an Arts Market, craft vendors, face painting, henna art, caricatures, and giveaways.

* Dunellen’s Music in the Park: The Dunellen Arts, Inclusion, and Culture Commission presents its 8th Annual Free Music in the Park series this August. The lineup includes two exciting performances: “This Old Engine" on Thursday, August 8, and "Retro Ravin’" on Thursday, August 22. Both shows are at 7:00pm at Washington Park in Dunellen. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs to enjoy an evening of music and relaxation.

* EARTH Center 2024 Garden Arts and Music Festival: The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will host the Garden, Arts, and Music Festival on Saturday, August 24, from 11:00am to 3:00pm at Davidson Mill Pond Park in South Brunswick. This family-friendly event will feature live art displays, local musical performances, an ice cream truck, and interactive activities for children. The Arts Institute of Middlesex County will also present a ‘Share Your Foodways’ kitchen demonstration.

Timbuctoo: NJ's Free Black Community Before the Civil War

(MONMOUTH JUNCTION, NJ) -- On Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 2:00pm, Historian Guy Weston will be presenting Timbuctoo: NJ's Free Black Community Before the Civil War at the South Brunswick Senior Center. Timbuctoo was settled in 1826 by formerly enslaved and free Black people with the assistance of Quakers. Most Timbuctoo residents owned their land, and the community established their own school and an AME Zion Church.

On Saturday, February 15, 2025 the New Jersey Punk Rock Flea Market and Darkside Art & Oddities Expo present "Til Death Do Us Part," a Valentine’s Day-themed night market that blends romance with the macabre. The event takes place at Broken Goblet Brewing in Bensalem, PA.

State Theatre New Jersey presents A Night in Lights Benefit Gala

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- State Theatre New Jersey will host A Night in Lights: State Theatre New Jersey Benefit Gala on Saturday, June 7, 2025. Proceeds from the gala directly support its mission to provide transformative arts education programs, affordable ticketing initiatives, and community outreach efforts that bring the joy of live entertainment to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. Held at the historic State Theatre, the evening includes dinner, dancing, a silent auction, and an intimate performance by Tony® Award-winning Broadway star Kelli O'Hara.

Ocean County College Hosts "The Homage Exhibit" for Black History Month

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- In celebration of Black History Month, Ocean County College will host "The Homage Exhibit" on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 on the College's main campus in Toms River. This special event is sponsored by OCC's Organization for Black Unity and Office of Student Life in collaboration with the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
