Spotlight On State Theatre New Jersey

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- Tickets for State Theatre New Jersey’s 2022-23 Broadway Season, featuring Tony® Award-winning hits and Broadway fan favorites, go on sale on Friday, September 16 at 11:00am.  The season includes performances of Tootsie, My Fair Lady, Legally Blonde—The Musical, and Jesus Christ Superstar.  The series also includes Stomp, R.E.S.P.E.C.T, Menopause The Musical, and concerts with Broadway stars Linda Eder and Patti LuPone.

A “Broadway Buy More Save More” program will also launch on September 16. Ticket buyers who purchase two Broadway shows save 10%, three or more shows save 15%. Ticket buyers can also become a season ticket holder and save 20%. Season ticket holders for the State Theatre’s Broadway shows receive a wide array of benefits, from first access to the best seats, 20% savings on single ticket prices and on any show added to the Broadway season, bring your friends 15% off discounts, ½ price drinks, exclusive concierge access to handle seating needs, and free exchanges within the same show.  

State Theatre New Jersey’s Broadway Series kicks-off with the Tony® Award-winning musical, Tootsie on November 4-6; then continues with the Lincoln Center Production of the classic musical My Fair Lady on January 27-29; the hilarious and sassy musical comedy, Legally Blonde—The Musical on April 28-30; and a mesmerizing new production of the iconic musical, Jesus Christ Superstar on June 9-11. 

Oher shows included in the Broadway season are the international percussion sensation for all ages, STOMP on December 2-3; the State Theatre debut of the ultimate musical tribute to Aretha Franklin, R.E.S.P.E.C.T on March 11-12; and hilarious musical parody, Menopause The Musical® on February 2. Also just-announced and added to STNJ’s Broadway season are two concerts with Broadway stars. The celebrated songstress and award-winning Broadway performer Linda Eder on January 22 and three-time Tony® Award-winner Patti LuPone in Don’t Monkey with Broadway on March 25.

2022-23 STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY BROADWAY SEASON: 

Tootsie - performances on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 8:00pm; Saturday, November 5, 2022 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm; and Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 2:00pm. Tickets: $40-$98.  Call it TOOTSIE! This laugh-out-loud love letter to the theater tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. Featuring a hilarious Tony®-winning book by Robert Horn and an outrageously clever score by 2018 Tony®-winner David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), this New York Times Critic’s Pick is “a joyful delight” (The Washington Post) that’s “so packed with punchlines, it should be called a jokebox musical!” (Bloomberg).  

 

STOMP - performances on Friday, December 2, 2022 at 8:00pm; and Saturdat, December 3, 2022 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm. Tickets: $40-$98. STOMP is explosive, provocative, sophisticated, and appeals to audiences of all ages. The international percussion sensation has garnered armfuls of awards and rave reviews and has appeared on numerous national television shows. The eight-member troupe uses everything but conventional percussion instruments—matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, hubcaps—to fill the stage with magnificent rhythms. Year after year, audiences worldwide keep coming back for more of this pulse-pounding electrifying show. 

Linda Eder - Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 7:00pm. Tickets: $29-$69. See celebrated songstress and award-winning Broadway star, Linda Eder live in concert! One of the world’s most beloved and versatile voices, Eder is a best-selling recording artist with 18 solo albums whose diverse repertoire spans Broadway, standards, pop, country, and jazz. 

My Fair Lady - performances on Friday, January 27, 2023 at 8:00pm; Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm; and Sunday, January 29, 2023 at 2:00pm. Tickets: $40-$98. From Lincoln Center Theater and director Bartlett Sher comes “a sumptuous new production of the most perfect musical of all time” (Entertainment Weekly), Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady. Boasting such classic songs as “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “The Rain in Spain,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady.” But who is really being transformed? 

Menopause The Musical®Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 8:00pm. Tickets: $29-$59. Come join the sisterhood! R.E.S.P.E.C.T.  - performances on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 8:00pm and Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 2:00pm. Tickets: $40-$98. R.E.S.P.E.C.T is an electrifying tribute celebrating the music of the legendary Aretha Franklin. This concert experience takes audiences on a journey of love, tragedy, courage, and triumph. Starring a live band and supreme vocalists, come experience a night of music by one of the greatest artists of all time. The concert features all your favorite hits in one evening, including "Natural Woman,” “Think,” “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me,” “Chain of Fools,” “Respect,” and many more.  

Patti LuPone - Don’t Monkey with Broadway - on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at 8:00pm. Tickets: $39-$99. Spend an evening with a true Broadway legend as three-time Tony® Award-winner Patti LuPone performs her concert Don’t Monkey with Broadway! Through indelible interpretations of classic Broadway show tunes by the likes of Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jule Styne, Stephen Schwartz, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin, LuPone explores how her life-long love affair with Broadway began and the unpredictability of the Great White Way. 

  

Legally Blonde—The Musical - performances on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 8:00pm; Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm; and Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 2:00pm. Tickets: $40-$98. Fabulously fun and international award-winning Legally Blonde—The Musical is the ultimate Broadway tribute to Girl Power! The story follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, sexism, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams, and proves that you can be legally blonde and STILL the smartest person in the room. This contemporary, sassy musical moves at a breakneck pace driven by memorable songs and explosive dances. Legally Blonde—The Musical warms the heart by proving that self-discovery can be way too much fun and hilarious to boot. Jesus Christ Superstar - performances on Friday, June 9, 2023 at 8:00pm; Saturday, June 10, 2023 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm; and Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 2:00pm. Tickets: $40-$98. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, a mesmerizing new production of the iconic musical phenomenon returns to the stage. Originally staged by London’s Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and helmed by the acclaimed director Timothy Sheader (Crazy for You, Into the Woods) and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom), this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival garnering unprecedented reviews and accolades. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring.  With lyrics and music by Emmy®, Grammy®, Oscar®, and Tony®-winners Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Gethsemane,” and “Superstar.” 

  

After major renovations, State Theatre New Jersey has reopened and celebrated its 100th Anniversary in December 2021 in a fully renovated theater including newly renovated lobbies, all new restrooms, upgraded HVAC systems, a new elevator for access to all levels, and brand-new theater seats. Originally built as a silent film and vaudeville palace, State Theatre’s historic significance was honored by PBS by featuring it in its documentary series, Treasures of New Jersey, in the fall of 2018. “Treasures of New Jersey: State Theatre New Jersey” can be streamed online.

Today, State Theatre is the largest performing arts center in Central New Jersey and has welcomed more than six million people through its doors since reopening as a non-profit performing arts center in 1988. State Theatre New Jersey is a cornerstone of the cultural vitality of Middlesex County and averages a total economic impact on New Brunswick and the surrounding area of more than $18 million a year. The mainstage programs have featured high-caliber artists such as Diana Ross, Tony Bennett, Kevin Hart, Ringo Starr, Melissa Etheridge, John Leguizamo, Harry Connick, Jr., Diana Krall, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Program offerings include Broadway, orchestra, family, dance, comedy, rock/pop, jazz, Performances for Schools, and Sensory-Friendly Performances. 

State Theatre New Jersey’s programs are made possible by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Grant funding has been provided by the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners through a grant award from the Middlesex County Cultural and Arts Trust Fund.
