SOPAC presents An Evening with Joan Osborne

originally published: 11/26/2023

(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) -- The South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) presents An Evening with Joan Osborne on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 8:00pm. Since she broke on to the scene more than 25 years ago with her multi-platinum album Relish (1995) and its touchstone mega-smash hit "One of Us," the seven-time Grammy nominee has never played it safe.  Osborne has followed her restless musical heart, exploring a diverse range of genres including Pop Rock, Soul, R&B, Blues, Roots Rock, Gospel, Funk, and Country.

Osborne is an 8-time Grammy nominee and multi-platinum selling recording artist. A native of Kentucky, she moved to NYC to attend NYU Film School, but dropped out after becoming involved in New York’s downtown music scene.

Now touring in support of 2023's Nobody Owns You, a record Osborne believes is her most personal to date. "These songs come from my feelings about people in my family, about people who I care about, and just what to do with this time that we have on the earth.  They come from a raw emotional place.  And I’m asking myself that question:  What am I here for?"

The powerful album’s deeply melodic songcraft, including some co-writes with producer Ben Rice (Valerie June; Norah Jones), serves up a rich Americana sound.  Her sumptuous alto and poetic lyrics are underpinned by rootsy textures, ranging from Rice’s banjo guitar, to Cindy Cashdollar’s lap steel, to Dave Sherman’s piano and Hammond organ, to Jack Petruzzelli’s baritone guitar.

Tickets starting at $39 and are available for purchase online. After having performed with Stevie Wonder at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, dueted with Luciano Pavarotti, and co-headlined a tour with the legendary Mavis Staples, Osborne is celebrating the power of music at SOPAC!  Don’t miss this energetic evening of original songs as well as some of Osborne’s greatest hits!

Find it in Hoboken on Saturday, May 10, 2025 when the 503 Social Club presents singer/songwriter Eddie Skuller's tribute to the "Ballads of Tom Waits." Skuller explores the dark, poetic world of Tom Waits with diverse selections from his extensive catalog. Although Skuller's amber-saturated vocals contrast with Wait's raucous gravel-like voice, there is a connection channeled through the music's emotional depth and lyrical intensity. Skuller can forge a deep, powerful bond with his audience, which enhances the tragic expression at the core of Waits' music.

On Banjo

'On Banjo' with Alison Brown

There was a time when I would have told you that my knowledge of the banjo was limited to whom I considered one of the most famous banjo players, who also happens to be my favorite musical amphibian, Mr. Kermit The Frog. "The Rainbow Connection" a la "The Muppet Movie" as performed by the little green dude, the world's greatest producer, was my first introduction to the string instrument and will forever hold a special place in my heart.
