“I can't say we're coming home, I mean, I'm home but I just can't wait to play two of my favorite places with my favorite people and my family," said former Jersey Shore resident and one-third of The Dales; Jacqueline Tozzi as she and her band mates Drew Lawrence and Preston Pope discussed their upcoming August 20 show at Asbury Park's Wonder Bar and the September 23 release of their new album, "Multi Trick Pony."
Over the years, The Dales have had several incarnations and currently call their base of operations Los Angeles, CA but the trio has roots that stretch from Jersey to Seattle as well as Chico, CA and to hear them tell it; they are most at home when together and on the road; no matter where that might be.
“Seattle, Jersey; Preston is from California, from Chico and gosh what a story," began Lawrence. "Preston and I have been playing together for 15 years in various acts and we met through a drummer down in L.A. who was putting together a project that basically provided one of the many failed Dales attempts and it seems that Preston and I; we were the two that always ended up sticking it out together. So, we started this with another friend of ours and that was six years ago and we had hopped around until we met the amazing Jacqueline."
“We met in Mammoth Hot Spring actually,” chimed in Tozzi, “None of us had our phones on us, I was talking to Drew and one of his friends. One of his friends who was probably trying to pull one on me and was hitting on me (laughs). I was talking about how I'd always wanted to get into music but I didn't really have an in and his friend was adamantly talking up Drew and he said that we should meet up sometime and have a writing session. So, I remembered Drew's e-mail which I had put in my head and a year later I emailed him and asked him about a writing session. He didn't get back to me for another nine months and then after that we had this magical writing session together and subsequently the female singer that they had in the band was sort of phasing out and so Drew said, “Hey; do you wanna go out on the road with four other smelly dudes and tour with us?” I said, yeah! So, that's how it came together.”
"Multi Trick Pony" is the second offering from the band and is a full-length record, which in a recent press release, Lawrence stated it was, "The balance of our different musical influences and finding a place where we all meet together in harmony."
So, with that in mind; how and where was the magic for it produced?
“We went to Bear Creek Studio in Washington State where Brandi Carlile has recorded a number of her albums as well as the Lumineers,"explained Lawrence. "There have been a number of amazing albums recorded there, it's a beautiful property on 12 acres and it's this big barn that they turned into a studio and we lived there for two weeks and recorded it this last December. We've been chipping away at doing overdubs and finishing up for the past six months and we're all pretty excited about it because it's a little bit more of a rocking album than previous Dales albums. This has some elements of soul, some punk in there and some new wave. We’ve been kind of wanting to blend some of our different influences; maybe this was our response to the pandemic and being shut down; we kind of wanted to come out with something that was gonna be like a feel-good album that would kind of take folks minds off of things and just give them something to dance to.”
Lawrence has co-written material with artists such as Christina Perri and has emerged as the principal songwriter of The Dales material but for this release; it was a total group effort.
“Drew is a prolific songwriter," interjected Pope, "Which we have all benefited from and we're happy but yeah I’d say it was Drew who writes most of our material.”
“On this album,” added Drew, “There is a lot of collaboration that we started during the pandemic; we started putting together a lot of songs. Jacqueline would bring in song ideas and we’d flush it out together, Preston would bring in song ideas for the album; there is definitely all three of us bringing stuff in on this album and it's pretty cool. Working with Christina, that was kind of what got my career started and yeah, we actually play that song we wrote, "Jar of Hearts" in our show; if somebody shouts it out, we’ll play it but for The Dales, we keep it in house between the three of us.”
Multiple styles and genres are present in the material this go-around; is that why it is titled "Multi Trick Pony?"
“It's like a beautiful accident how the name of this album came together and I think of it that way I think you guys do as well,” began Tozzi who was quickly joined in agreement by her band mates. “Absolutely," continued Lawrence, "It's like we're challenging the belief that we have to be beholden to a folk sound or whatnot; we're embracing our other influences.”
Currently, "Glass Wall" is the first single from the forthcoming album and it was released in May but with the album coming out in September; what is the plan leading up to its release?
“I think our team just wanted enough time to put the single out, which was back in May," said Lawrence. "That gives us some time to go on radio and then I think we're gonna have another single out, possibly here at the end of August. We think that will be the right time to do it and we also have more tour dates on the West Coast so we kind of wanted to coincide the release with all of the touring we're doing.”
The Dales seemingly thrive on touring and are not shy about going on the road and their hectic schedule indicates that, They also have a knack for adapting to their surroundings with their supporting cast.
“We have about 30 cities we're trying to hit right now and we are actually doing this as a full band," Lawrence continued. "We're just trying to be versatile; if we're playing smaller opening gigs for bigger artists, we will go out as a trio; or if there is a lower budget but when we're headliners, we love to do it as a full band. So, I think Jacqueline is in the car right now with one of the new Dales who also happens to be in her family;""I am," said Tozzi, "He is actually a Brooklyn boy and my cousin and he'll be drumming for us for the first time this tour and then we have Brian Simpson who plays bass with us a lot and he will be on bass. So, at the Wonder Bar we will be a five piece and it’s just us on the bill that night.”
“I feel like New York and New Jersey are such fun shows," she went on, "I mean they're fun for all of us to play but because it's home for me and that's where I grew up; all of my family is from Brooklyn and Jersey City and the shore so those shows just have an incredible energy and there's just a lot of support and a lot of really awesome family and friends and so they're just some of my favorite shows to play because they're just a blast. “
So, the band are no strangers to the Wonder Bar? According to Lawrence, the venue has quickly become one of their favorite stops.
“We've performed there a few times now, a couple of times a year for the last few years; actually, we were in Jersey March of 2020 and that was our last time right before the world shut down. So, we went out with a bang down there at the Wonder Bar; this is our third year in a row playing there. “
Prior to the show at the Wonder Bar, they will take the stage in New York City on August 19 at Rockwood Music Hall in what will be the first of their final two shows on this leg of the tour. They, like many other acts, have taken the opportunity to test the new material on live audiences during this stretch of shows prior to actually touring in support of the new record once released; where do they go from here?
“The tour ends on the 20th and then we've got some one-off things in Phoenix a week later and we have one in September and then we've got the West Coast; Seattle, Portland and California in October," offered Lawrence. "We have one in Santa Barbara and those kind of West Coast things are a little spread out because we can just go out for the weekend and come back and that sort of thing. We kind of did all of the test driving for the new album when we were opening for Mark Broussard earlier this year. We had 10 dates with him and we tested out a lot of the new songs then but I think we're going to be booking more tours; we're already looking forward to the Spring; we’ll hit the road again and then we’ll start writing the next album I guess."
