"That's right," laughed a very jovial Tommy Castro, "The record has been out for a while but it's summertime so we're hitting all of the spots. We've been to Europe a couple of times this year and that's where I'm at now, I'm calling you from Romania; we have a show here and then head back to the States for a private event in Minnesota, a festival in New Hampshire and the gig at Somers Point and The Iridium. We are just keeping busy and we'll finally be home in September and I'll get a chance to hang around my house and relax for a few weeks (laughs)."
"The record" is called "A Bluesman Came To Town" and is currently out on the AlligatorRecords label but the exciting part is; Castro will be making two stops in the area. The first is at the famed Iridium in New York City on August 17 and the second is in New Jersey for the Somers Point Beach Concert Series on August 18.
Castro's brand of music is most times categorized as "Blues" or "Blues Rock," something, as you'll read a bit later, he mildly disputes but one thing that is indisputable is; he is highly skilled at his craft, well-respected and very much a survivor in an industry and genre which isn't always the easiest.
Blues music itself can be a hard sell at times and often times many artists struggle to find success here in the U.S. and often times do better overseas, specifically in the European markets but Castro readily says that he and the band do just fine here at home and any incursion into the European markets is by design.
"We've had ups and downs over the years, there were times when work was a little more scarce but since COVID is now gone, the last couple of years, things have been picking up," he said with confidence. "It has not really been the case here with us. We made a conscious decision to develop the European market again. We had that in the '90s when we were with a certain record label; they were releasing our records on an independent label based in France and we would go over there at least once or twice a year in those days. Then things changed after the internet kicked in and the way that people get their music changed and during that transition, the little label we were working with over there basically slowed down a lot and the touring for us kind of stopped there for a while but over the last six or seven years we've concentrated on developing Europe again and it has been working out great for us. We've had a bunch of festivals this summer and we're going back again in November but our bread and butter is the U.S. The Midwest and East Coast we are really strong and of course the West Coast where we are from."
One of the ways to ensure said success and continue to move forward in the future is adaptability.
"We've been consistent, it has been 30 years now," he went on to explain. "As I said, there were times when for whatever reason, things slowed down a little bit for us; we kept working but maybe we got a few less festivals or something like that. We started out really strong in the '90s and stayed that way until 2010 or somewhere around there and then there was a little dip. So, I rearranged the band a little bit and kind of re-invented it a little bit; gave the band a name, Tommy Castro & the Painkillers and started leaning into the guitar a little more and making it more of a guitar show or should I say more guitar driven. In the world of guitar; I don't even really try and compete in that. People like our songs, they like our show; my voice and the guitar are one of the things I do but it's not the focal point of our act. The guitar in blues has come back big and strong with a lot of really great players out there now and with some women players who are on the scene making it attractive and exciting so that you're not just seeing a bunch of guys playing guitar all of the time; ya' know? Like I say, I don't really depend on my guitar skills to have a career; if that was the case I'd probably not have a career (Laughs). I'm a pretty good guitar player but I'm a meat and potatoes blues guy. I'm not that mind blowing when it comes to guitar, I play guitar to the song that I'm playing and it's generally a pretty simple straightforward approach; if you want to get dazzled by amazing guitar skills, there are a lot of other guys you may want to go see like Joe Bonamassa, Eric Gales and a number of other guys who are just great guitar players. I like Marcus King a lot; I think he's great. Derek Trucks, I don't think anyone compares to Derek Trucks, he's kind of in a class of his own. Coming from the Allman Brothers roots and taking it to a whole other level; not that there was anything wrong with Duane Allman's playing or Dickey Betts or Warren Haynes for that matter but I just think Derek has taken that world of guitar to a whole other level. Him and Susan (Tedeschi) are such nice people; I've known them for a long time. I don't see them much these days but years ago, Susan and I were on tour with BB King for a batch of dates in the summertime and we got to be friends. Interestingly enough, I got half of the tour, about 30 dates and the other half went to Derek Trucks as the opening act which was an interesting coincidence. I love Susan's playing, she's got a great style and she gets so into it. When she'd play guitar, she'd be jamming her shoes into the stage from stomping her foot and sometimes she'd bust through her nylon stockings with her toe. She'd have open toe shoes on and her nylon stockings and we would wait for that (laughs) and watch her play and think, that is so cool and she's a pretty impressive guitar player and when you're playing the blues that's what you want. You want to dig in with a lot of passion and emotion and we always dug her guitar playing but of course she's also known for her amazing voice."
So, if his guitar and vocals are not the "Focal point" and it is "The songs" that garner the attention; who is the songwriter?
"I write most of the songs and I co-write with other professional songwriters; once in a while my bass player Randy, who I've been together with for 30 years now; he'll come to me with an idea once in a while. Some of our best songs were written from mine and his collaborations but this last album was mostly a collaboration with Tom Hambridge the producer. and I have a whole stable of really great songwriters that I get together with and work out my ideas."
With the new album firmly under his belt and tour dates keeping him busy; remember that mild dispute mentioned earlier? What is the biggest dilemma he faces once he hits the stage?
"I think it's a 90-minute show, sometimes it's two sets but I'm pretty sure at The Iridium it will be one 90-minute set and that's the hardest part because I have so many songs that I want to play; I've got over 20 albums out and in those 20 albums there are a lot of good songs and it's not that it's just good songs but I have a variety of styles, sounds, grooves and approaches in my show. I mean, it's pretty eclectic that way, it's blues, it's soul music, it's rock 'n' roll, it's rock blues, it's traditional blues, wherever the songs take me. I listen to a lot of stuff and I've been inspired by this music ever since I was a kid listening to Elvin Bishop and Taj Mahal and of course all of the other blues guitar players like BB King, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, and Muddy Waters of course. Cats like "Gatemouth" Brown and I just soaked up all of the great guitar players like Michael Bloomfield who was an influence of mine; I've been inspired by all of these cats since I was a kid. I keep listening for new stuff as time goes on and more and more great music comes out; I just can't settle on one style of playing. Most artists do, they find their sound and they stick with that and they go with it. I can't, I have to do stuff that's Ray Charles influenced and Wilson Pickett influenced, Eric Clapton, BB King, it's kind of all over the map in that way. What I'm getting at is, it's hard to put all of the things that I think we do well into; if we have a 60-minute set it's really hard, 90-minutes is still really hard to get it all in but we'll do a 90-minute show doing songs from my whole catalog going back to the early '90s and a few songs from the latest release, "A Bluesman Came To Town" which was a nice breath of fresh air for us because it's a bit of a different concept and it has been received very well and given my career a little shot in the arm in terms of us doing a little better since its release."
Tommy is very close to his fan base and their support is invaluable to him, especially if they "Get it."
"There are people who really get what we do, I mean really get it. A lot of times, people will come to a show because they've heard of me and that I'm a blues guitar player or they may just want to hear blues guitar playing and that's just one of the things that I do. Like I said, our music and our show, it's not just all about that. So, when I hear about fans who find us and really get what we're trying to do, it means a lot and there are enough of them out there to keep us going."
Fortunately yet unfortunately, there is still time left to see Castro and his band mates but you've only two days to do so and with that in mind; please visit https://www.tommycastro.com/ to find out more about both shows and Tommy himself.
That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
