Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...7/3/25

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 07/03/2025

"Absolutely! It is a tribute to him but it is not a tribute band," began Bon Scott "79th Birthday Tribute" organizer John Jackson as he discussed this year's event, past history and more. "What we're trying to do is model this off like what the "Experience Hendrix" folks do with their "Red House" tour where they've got several guitar players that come and do various Jimi Hendrix songs but there is not one person who is being Jimi Hendrix. So, last year we had 16, this year we have about a dozen different singers who are all going to do one or two songs; their favorites. So, it's more of a celebration and that's why we do it on his birthday rather than like a tribute gig the way people have come to know them. Hopefully we'll do him justice, it will be hot, it will be loud but it will be fun, I promise."

July 9 at New York City's Bowery Electric, John Jackson will present the second of what is now an annual event honoring the memory and legend that is Bon Scott, former frontman of AC/DC.

Vocalists such as Corey Glover, Jimmy Kunes, Erik Toast, Peter Shaw and many more will come together to pay tribute to one of the most memorable voices and names in rock history with an 8 p.m. show that Jackson repeatedly promises, "Will be great!"

Organizing an event such as this isn't something one just does on a whim; how did John get involved with this project and how did it come together?

"When Bon passed, he was survived by two brothers who now have kids of their own," he started. "So, it's the nephews who have sort of taken over the business and when Bon was gonna turn 75 about four years ago, they started to engage myself and get into marketing and merchandising and stuff they could do that wasn't AC/DC specific. So, we're really trying to carve out a niche and get people to remember Bon for who he was and not just the early singer of AC/DC. He was in bands before AC/DC and just a really important figure in music and we want to remind people of why that is."

"I was lucky enough to work with the AC/DC catalog in my previous life at Sony Music for almost 20 years. We did album reissues, DVD sets like, "Family Jewels" and "Plug Me In" and the "Backtracks" box set and the "Iron Man 2" soundtrack and there was a big run of getting the catalog up and in shape and out to more people. After I left, the family was looking for something to do around his 75th birthday and their attorney who I worked with quite a bit on the AC/DC stuff recommended that they call me and so they did and that has been what it has been. We've spent the last four years trying to build up their business; like I said, merchandising, website, social media, collaborations with different companies and it's all to really just remind people of who he was and why he is important."

For those of us over the age of 55, it's crazy to think that Scott would have been celebrating his 79th birthday but when told that it would've been hard to imagine him singing "Let Me Put My Love Into You" at this age, Jackson couldn't help but laugh and bring to mind that his replacement isn't far  behind.

"What's crazy is, you go see the band now and Brian is 77; he's almost there and he's still absolutely killing it. I saw him up in Foxboro near Boston and it was just a fantastic show. I think it can be done but I think it'd still be funny to see Bon do it. You know he wouldn't be wearing a shirt and he'd weigh about 100 pounds and stuff like that; to think what could've been had he still been with us is a fun thing to do."

The first Bon birthday bash was on July 9, 2024 which went over very well, well enough that Jackson and his team decided to expand things a bit this year but with expansion, is there trepidation?

"We were dumb enough or smart enough to book a room twice as big as last year for this year;" he said with a laugh."Bowery Electric holds about 200 people and thanks to kind folks like yourself, we're getting the word out there to make sure it gets packed in and really busy. Yes, the trepidation is still there, your fine listeners could help me be less stressed out by buying some tickets (Laughs) that would be amazing but that doesn't ever really go away because you want to do a good job for the family and Bon's memory. So, I don't think it will ever feel like an easy or simple thing to do; you can go to ticketweb.com which is where Bowery Electric sells their tickets or there is also a direct link at the top of our website www.Bonscottofficial.com and it'll take you to the TicketWeb link and you can buy them right there."

"Doors are at 7:30 p.m., the show starts at 8 p.m. and the opening band is called Ravagers who are a fantastic New York rock band; I'm really looking forward to it. I actually get to play Malcolm in the band, so I'm the rhythm guitar player, Paul McGilloway who does the best Angus you've ever seen besides Angus, Ivan Bodley playing bass and Kenny Soule on drums who actually toured with Bon in AC/DC in 1978 which is crazy. He was in a band called Nantucket who had just done a cover of "Long Way to the Top" about a month after Bon died. So, he's got the history, he's a huge fan, we're all big fans and as I said, we've got about a dozen singers who are all gonna do one or two songs, including Corey Glover of Living Colour who is gonna do "Highway to Hell" and a bunch of others; I promise it's gonna be great!"

The assembled lineup is full of national, regional and local talents; how did Jackson choose who would perform and what songs they would sing?

"We had some holdovers from last year and people who wanted to come and do it again and through the backing band and people who have seen it before, we are now having people approach us saying, "Hey, I want to do this" and "Can I do this song?" So, the growth has been very natural and I'm just as excited about the lineup this year as I was last year. Everybody came to it with a song they wanted to do and there were no overlaps and once we said, "Highway to Hell" was off the table, then it just became, I'll do "Sin City" or I really like "TNT" or whatever. So, it was a lot easier than you can imagine and what you want is somebody to have a favorite and come in with that energy and not be assigned a song because they'll never do as good a job as if they picked it and it's sort of their baby to now deliver to the audience. I'm happy that everybody had their own signature tune that they wanted to do. Each vocalist gets either one or two; Jimmy Kunes is doing "Problem Child" and "Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be" but most people are just doing one and we'll just bang'em out and it'll be about 20 songs total between the dozen singers."

Paying the bills and amassing marketing for an event such as this is always a task. John says they've retained some of last year's backers as well as some new ones.

"We're still working with Dixxon Flannel and this year we have a brand new statue out from Knucklebonz and they bare a great partner; it's a statue of Bon in the "Long Way to the Top" flatbed truck video with the bagpipes and white vest; they've done a great job. We have a poster from a company called Collections that's doing all of the AC/DC tour posters; it'll be an animated, almost like a superhero picture of him. So, yeah, we've got a ton of stuff going on and really, we're building towards next year for what would've been his 80th birthday so we are building opportunities now so we can announce stuff and have things available for a year from now. So, we're already behind the ball on a few different opportunities because it takes that long to get things together."
