We just finished a European tour of two weeks and we're getting into the American tour of three weeks and I have exactly two days off," laughed the very talented Ana Popovic."I know it's weird but we are working hard now because the new record is coming out so; we've really had a good beginning of the year and ready to get into summer months."
Born in Belgrade to a very musical family, Ana was introduced to music and blues music at a very young age and she took to both immediately.
"I grew up with music, it was a huge part of my family," she said enthusiastically. "Growing up, I really had a lot of jam sessions with my dad and we had lots of rock instruments around; guitars and music magazines and I loved it; you know? I was introduced to blues at a very early age. When I was three or four years old, I was already listening to Howlin' Wolf and Bukka White which provided a degree of awe. I started playing guitar and I knew it was my calling and it was just a most natural thing for me and that's how I got started. I started with the blues and then went to jazz and older music and once I started touring; I really never stopped. This is the only job I've ever had and I've recorded many records like, "Live For life" which came out during the pandemic and of course "Power" is the latest studio album. I actually went to school for interior design and I've gone pretty far with it; a house that I designed is on the cover of one of the Los Angeles magazines that we love and doing that is my relaxation and is something that I do just when I have time. I love it but I'm interested in many things but music is the only job I've ever had and it is my passion. There's a few songs on "Power" as well that talk about this; I get excited still when I'm having a guitar made or when it's shipped from the factory and the fact that we get to play it and enjoy the conversations about it, it's just the biggest thrill and no matter how many years I've been in this business, when people ask me; how-do-you-do that? I love to travel for my work and wake up at 3 a.m. in LAX; I love it! I just love everything about it and of course playing live is the cherry on the cake. Playing for people and playing in different countries every night; waking up in Paris one day and in New York City on the other, it's just something that I did and that I still find very much inspiring in my life."
Touring is something she does often and with a ferocity that is unrivaled. Earlier she spoke of having two consecutive days off, a rarity for her and on this current tour, which sees shows at the Iridium in New York City on May 9 and The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ on May 10; she goes a minimum of four straight nights before a day off and then back at it again all over the U.S.
Her new album, "Power" is out on May 5 and she is simply over the top excited by her latest work.
"Oh yes, we are supporting a new album, it's called "Power" and it's a great story and actually, May 5 is the release date. "Power" is coming and it's a wonderful record; lots of new, exciting musical influences that I haven't touched on before. There is some Gospel, obviously some Blues and Soul. My drummer is Chris Coleman and he's one of the greatest drummers in the world. He's played with everybody from Chaka Khan to Stevie Wonder and Prince. So, there was a lot of influence from Detroit, from Michigan and Motown. I just love how these people play, it was my biggest discovery because with every record, I like to kind of discover a musical city and I mean, all this year I was listening to music and it has really been a lot of fun making music with these people. Detroit just happened to be on my to-do list this year so, it's pretty full of that influence. We are very happy to be playing a lot of it and on this tour, we have already been playing it and the response has been very positive. Usually with a new record, the audience kind of needs some time to get accustom to the new songs or take it home and listen but this record is love at first listen. I will take it because we've played 80 percent of the album and not just one new song. The songs are made to be played live, I've got great vocal range with the horn arrangements and it's just like the arrangements were already there for us to play live and that's how it's been for months now so, we're very much liking it. On this tour I have my standard six-piece band and they're incredible. They are just very, very good musicians. We are also releasing music videos and you can find them on the website; so far, we have released three already for three of the tracks and we are releasing another one on May 5 for a rock song called "Flicker 'n Flame." That's something that is just brand new that will be coming out."
The Blues genre, never an easy task for female artists, has had its share of personalities, ups, downs and through it all has consistently influenced generations of musicians. When asked how she feels about being one of the core players who are bringing the Blues back to the forefront; she was very much enthused.
"Things are changing and they are changing rapidly," she offered. "I think that's wonderful. We still look at the guitar magazines and 95 percent are male but that's changing for the good and the same goes for festivals and stuff like that but I think it's wonderful to see the change and it's wonderful to see more women picking up guitar more than any other instrument and that's where I want to see this go. I always was very feeling very confident about my style and nothing slowed me down even though I'm someone from Eastern Europe it's what I wanna do and if you like it great and if you don't; it's OK because this is my sound and I'm not gonna copy anybody I'm just gonna do me. So, I'm sure there were people that were feeling like OK; what is this woman? What is she going to do up there with this guitar? I didn't let it bother me and I think; you know, somebody has got to do it and for me, guitar was always my instrument. When I started there was not a whole lot of women playing guitar and that was even more attractive to me; The fact that not everybody was doing it. I just wanted to be the one that will do it and do it my way and present it my way in the right style and on stage do the right songs and the right show. I'd always wanted a super good band, rehearsed and ready and when I am doing a show, I didn't want no fillers. I want people to be excited and not going away from my show. I like when they don't have any downtime when it's all just great songs back-to-back and yeah, that's what I was doing all this time. I think that people would love to see more women do it and I think it is changing. I think the female artists right now; I think that they're bringing something else to the table and I think that's something that the Blues can definitely use. First of all, there are no players anymore to be undermined. I mean, they are great, they are different, they're good with their skills and phrasing and do whatever is necessary for a guitar player to be recognized and then on top of that; they put on a great show. They look great and they sing great so, yeah, there's no reason why a woman shouldn't be fronting a blues band and for me, this is now kind of turning into a big "In." Although it didn't stop me when it wasn't "In," I was still playing and we never had a slow year in 20 years. So, it's just nice to see and I think it's a wonderful time. Don't underestimate anyone because everybody's doing a great show and if you can't do that you really shouldn't come out because everybody's just killing it. Today, at every festival you see, the bands are so good and that's the times now; you gotta bring your "A game" every time out."
So, at The Lizzie Rose Music Room on May 10; what is the audience in store for?
"Oh, it's going to be fabulous! The new songs are gonna just really engage people and they're gonna inspire them and it's just such a good feeling and such a good mix of different styles and it is amazing. The new material, they are just better than the best. So, it's gonna be a mix of all kinds of different styles based on Blues, some Funk and Gospel and I'll be promoting "Power" which is a really incredible record and telling the background stories is even more incredible."
That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
