Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...4/27/23

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 04/27/2023

"My early introduction to music was when my dad gave me his cassette collection,” says guitarist Clay Melton“There were these cases of music and they had a lot of Texas Country, a lot of Classic Rock, Willie Nelson, ZZ Top and stuff like that. Then I got into guitar when I was 11 after hearing Hendrix, "All Along The Watchtower" and that's all it took, it just blew my mind. I was really obsessed with Hendrix like most guitarists starting out and I read and listened to the things and songs he covered and then I did the same with the others.”

Melton, who at his current age of 27 has been performing more than half of his life; has two albums to his credit, released a single from his upcoming third album and will be performing Friday, April 28 at the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA. is that “Next generation” of Blues/Blues Rock player who is far more than capable of helping revive an entire genre. Melton’s sound is brash, intense, straight forward and rife with the traditions of Texas style Blues music; his home state.

“I was beginning to like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Buddy Guy and you know, I just went back all the way through the Blues and it was always fascinating to me,” he continued. “I wasn't listening to what was popular when I was in middle school that's for sure (Laughs) but it just has always fascinated me and I've been playing around Houston since I was 13; I was lucky to grow up in a Houston area where there's a lot of rich Blues history and a lot of really great players that were also welcoming and mentors to me when I was younger."

"Also, my aunt; she was a huge Zeppelin fan and she got me into the band and they were definitely a revolutionary point in my life for sure; John Bonham, to me, is the quintessential Rock drummer. Actually, here's exactly how the first conversation I ever had with our drummer Zach Grindle went; we've been playing together for nine years now. He had just gotten out of the Army and was looking for a band and I was looking for a drummer so, I asked him what his influences are and he said, "I love John Bonham, I like to hit my drums hard and I want to rock and roll."  I said, you've got the job! Then on bass, we have another Zach, Zachary Cox, he plays bass and is also a fantastic guitarist and also plays piano. I've known him since middle school, we played in a band together then and in high school together and then we kind of lost touch but reconnected about a year and a half ago; not long after the pandemic we hooked up and he's been a great addition to the team ever since. So, he has been playing with us since 2021"

Having opened for or shared a stage with Robert Cray, Grand Funk Railroad, Chris Daughtry, members of Kool & The Gang and more, Melton, as previously mentioned, has two full-length albums and is currently working on a third; from which he released a single a couple of moths ago but this time, he has taken on much more responsibility.

"We're in the recording process right now with this new album and we put out "Alive on a Wire" in February which was the first single from the album,” he explained. “This album is the first time that we're doing everything with the recording. We're recording everything just in my living room in Houston and I'm loving the process. Over the life of the band, all of our recordings have been in studio with producers and I do love to have another set of ears there who haven't played the song a million times already but you know doing everything ourselves as a three piece and recording it, having the luxury of taking our time with it, getting to sleep on an idea and come back and say, yeah, I like that or that will make a good video is nice. We don't do the mixing ourselves and that's because we have a great relationship with a Sebastian Cure who moved back to his home in Columbia and opened a studio down there and we've been working with him since 2016 when he was out of Austin Texas. So, now, we just send everything out online; we still play the producer role to an extent but we're lucky that he really gets what we want out of our recordings."

Songwriting varies from artist to artist and most certainly song to song and in today’s lyrically adrift climate, it’s at times hard to find a well-crafted and well-rounded song. Fortunately, Melton’s approach to writing is open-ended and very much a group effort.

"As far as who it's (His music/subjects) directed at; I can always change the perspective, it can change and things of that sort but really it's usually an idea that has some sort of sentiment, emotion or specific type of memory attached to it. I usually just try and narrow it down to that and get rid of all of the other things that aren't really relevant is what I'm trying to say but also; I was a guitarist first growing up and sometimes you know, I definitely don't write with any specific approach antitypically. I tend to kind of catapult to an idea, take it as far as I can, get a verse and a chorus and then I'll take it to the band and we'll arrange it as a group and it's at that moment when everything happens. The test I feel for us, as far as whether or not the song has legs, is if we still want to keep working on it after that first time and if it’s not working I'm very much a fan of just moving on and chasing new ideas. Growing up, I didn't have a consistent group so I was demoing a lot on a little Tascam multi-track and doing so from a pretty young age. I would demo every aspect myself and I enjoy it so much now these days with the band that even if I have a drum rhythm implied in my head, I'm not gonna go through the trouble of programming anything to show the drummer because I want to see what he comes up with and his ideas; because more minds are always going to be greater than just one alone."

"We're not a jam band but we pretty much know that in all of our songs we have designated sections where you know the solo's gonna be good yet not the same every time. I grew up playing in the Houston Blues scene and going to the Blues jams and that's, like I said earlier; the live experience and learning in a live setting with other people helps you gain experience and it kind of compounds and you start learning these lessons in real time and at an accelerated rate. I mean, you can practice everything on your own, which allows you to come in fresh but I'm thankful for Conga Carlos; Congas by Carlos was his stage name; he was one of the first to really give me an opportunity playing in Houston and he taught me important lessons like, just listen and keep your eyes open and also when to shut up and when to play and stuff like that."

Clay and his band mates are hitting the road ahead of their upcoming release in an attempt to lay the groundwork and familiarize their audiences and fans with the new material before its actual release. So; what do they have in store for those attending the show?

"This is pretty much a four to six month tour this year; we're getting out a lot on the road this year ahead of the album. We were on the East Coast last summer in 2022 supporting a Blues Rock band called The Blue Stones out of Canada and playing with an artist named Sarah Grace and we played at the Sellersville and it is a beautiful venue and the people there are great! I think they do a great job of taking care of the artist and also making the shows available for the concert goers. We're really looking forward to it and I believe we will have announcements on an opening act very soon. We usually do a 90-minute set and at Sellersville we're doing two 50-minute sets which gives us an opportunity to show a lot of different sides of the band. Last time, we were doing a lot of support stuff so we only got 25 minutes and this time we get to really show the people what we've been doing lately."
