"I tell everyone that I'm the last surviving original member of my band, however I had a 50/50 chance where some other guys didn't," laughed John Ford Coley as he reflected upon his former partnership with the late England Dan, current bands with no original members, his very loyal fan base and his fellow mellow rockers as they get ready to bring "Rock The Dock" to Englewood, NJ for a night of some of the greatest adult contemporary and easy listening tunes ever created.
April 27 finds John and his fellow sailors docking the "Yacht" at the Bergen PAC as they are winding down this current leg of their journey but keeping the crew together is never an easy task and as the years go by it is beginning to get more difficult.
"Yes, It's gonna be me, Ambrosia, Peter Beckett and Walter Egan; we've played here before. We try to keep the same people in there if possible but they are getting hard to find; seriously, it is getting harder and harder. Gary passed away, Stephen Bishop doesn't tour anymore, there are people who can do it and those who can not. Ambrosia still backs everyone up and they've still got the original guys in there except David Pack, he's no longer with the group."
Musicians often think of themselves as time machines; their talents and skills allow every one of us to travel back to moments, remember events, milestones, tragedies and triumphs just by whatever song they perform. In John's case, songs such as, "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" or "We'll Never have to Say Goodbye Again" among others have stood the test of time and are still as popular as they were in the mid 1970s. A true testament to one's talent but that can also come with a price; how does an artist approach new material when the fans appreciate the old material so passionately?
"We generally don't play new songs and the reason why is because the audience, when they come to see us play, they really want to go down memory lane and I get that and it's hard to play new songs. When I play by myself I can play maybe one or two but again, you're still kind of regulated to the songs that they remember and they do not relate to the new songs so, that's just kind of where it is. I've got two, no, actually three new albums. I have a thing called, "Eclectic;" it's 26 brand new songs and another called "Sketches" which is 10 songsyou've not heard either and then I did the "Long Way Home: Live In Israel & L.A." and you get a lot of mix of the new and the old stuff there. The thing is though, they (The audience/fans) have come to hear those songs; I enjoy playing the old songs but every now and then it is nice to have a new song to play but that's the way it is; it's just the way it is."
With Ambrosia leading the way with their own set as well as doubling as the "House band," what can one expect at a show such as this as well as beyond?
"The entire set is probably about 90 minutes or so. I play four songs, Walter plays about three, Peter plays about three; sometimes I play five and then Ambrosia finishes out the night because again, I had like six hits and you want to play at least four of those; the Top 10s and then not play "Gone To(o) Far." The thing is, I'm playing hits, I don't know what Peter plays, I think he plays a couple of covers because their big hit was "Baby Come Back" and Walter's was the other one, "Magnet and Steel."
"The night before this show, I'll be in Detroit and I just came off a big long run in March and April. So, I'm just doing a couple of things for fun in May and then we start again in June and we're touring quite a bit which is really great."
