"I'm not sure how they're framing it," began Sirius XM radio personality Eddie Trunk with a slight laugh; "I mean, I've written a couple of books but I don't necessarily know if it's going to revolve around my books. I've written two books, "Essential Hard Rock And Heavy Metal Volume One" and "Volume Two" so, my most recent one would have been "Volume Two" which probably is about eight to ten years old at this point.
The Lizzie Rose Music Room in Tuckerton, NJ is not only a destination for music enthusiasts in search of an up close and personal evening with their favorite entertainers; oh no-no, it has become THE destination for just that and on Friday April 14 at 7:30 p.m., Trunk will take part in their, "Storyteller Series" where he'll discuss his books, music, radio, TV and much more.
Born in Jersey and still a resident, with a career spanning approximately 40 years, Trunk has hosted and still hosts multiple radio programs but his meteoric rise to fame came when he hosted VH1 Classic's, "That Metal Show." So, what drew him to music and in particular Metal? According to Eddie, passion played a big part.
"Well two things really," he began. "First of all, the fact that I've been able to make a living and a career and support my family while following my passion; I'm very fortunate and lucky to have been able to do so because I don't know what else I'd be doing in my life if I didn't find a way to make a living doing this. As a kid right out of high school, I was able to take music and the bands; It was really the bands that I was liking when I was a kid, I wasn't hearing them on the radio and I wasn't hearing them being represented the right way. I wanted to find ways that other people could learn about them; you know? There were a lot of guys that were from England that weren't getting U.S. record deals and I was like; how can I share this stuff with other people? So, my whole mission was to figure out a way to do that so right out of the gate I took to writing so people could read about them, then I got on the radio so OK, now I can play these records. Then I eventually started working for a record company; OK, now I can actually help maybe get some of these bands signed. So, it was always about that; turning people onto music that I liked, whether it was new bands or old bands that didn't make it but that I thought were great and to this day, It's actually still like that for me. Every day, I'll get a text or a tweet or a call to one of my radio shows; something like, "Hey; do you know I discovered this band because of you? You turned me on to these guys!" So, whether it was a band I did that for or that person 30 years ago or a band last week or it could be a band from 50 years ago that people say, "I had no idea about them and now I'm into them;" whether it's that or it's a brand new band, it makes me really happy. That's why I started doing it and that's why I still do it and enjoy doing it. I think now, or more so now, that may be more important than ever because anybody can make a band, anybody can put out records, I think people who are fans of music actually do need somebody to guide them a little bit because there's so much overflowing stuff because of the ability to have a bunch of platforms. So, to still do that and to hear from people that I turned them onto a band is great."

"I can probably more accurately describe the music now in 2023 that I like as, "Hard Rock" as opposed to metal because metal has evolved and gotten a lot more extreme and aggressive and the more extreme aggressive stuff; I don't tend to like as much. So, I think just because of the change; I mean, I was a hard rock guy back in the day; I was one of the first people in the world to play Metallica on the radio and I didn't know what that was and that was the most extreme thing I had ever heard at that time. I think it was the energy in the music, it was the guitars, it was the singing in it and I just loved everything about it. I also probably liked the fact that it was a bit of an underdog type music. I was very much an outcast in high school, I wasn't into the music that everybody else was into, I didn't get invited to the parties, I was being mocked for the stuff that I liked so, that made me like it even more but there was also just something about hearing a big loud power cord that really touched me."
So, with passion firmly rooting him and his career, Trunk has amassed a plethora of pictures, stories, anecdotes and thoroughly enjoys talking with music fans and his supporters; which should be only enhanced by the Lizzie Rose's intimate setting.
"When I go and do this, I keep it very, very unscripted. I really have done a bunch of speaking shows over the years and I try to keep them very loose and I really like to keep it to talking about how I got my start a little bit and kind of let that set the stage. Then from there it's a lot of streams of consciousness and it's just kind of me telling my story. Then once I put that out there; because there's people that know me from radio, I currently do eight live radio shows a week and then there's people that know me from my past TV stuff, there are people that know me from my books but I never know if people know the full story or how I got my start and where it all began. So, I try to fill in some of those gaps because I find that everybody is connected with me in a different way and somebody might not know and that's what I try to set out there at the beginning and then from there just really work off of the audience. Talk about what they want to hear about, what they want to know about and then in the last few that I've done in different parts of the country, I started incorporating some images. I have an archive of just some incredible photos and I'll put those up on the screen behind me and I've no idea what photo has come up. I like to do it that way, I like kind of being put on the spot. I'll just tell a story or two about the photo and recount why it's important and what it meant to me and what was going on at that time. The people seem to really enjoy that and then I'll just turn it over to the audience and let them ask me whatever they want and see what direction that goes. Once I get going, I can keep rolling and my biggest challenge actually; is self-editing and trying not make it too long winded. I've gone anywhere from an hour to as much as a little over 2 hours and that really kind of depends upon the venue, the promoter and how long they'd like me to stay. I read the audience and if it feels like it's getting too long winded for the people; I'll usually keep it somewhere between an hour and ten minutes and an hour and forty minutes."
Besides the Q & A, he plays a game of "Stump The Trunk;" has he ever not been able to recall or come up with an answer?
"What I find fascinating is, I'm 40 years in going on radio and being in the music business professionally. I just don't know where questions are gonna come from," he said with a laugh. "There's a lot of people that used to watch my old TV show and this is New Jersey, my home state; I might have people come up and say, "Hey I bought a record from you at a mall in 1984 (laughs)" or "You sold me my first copy of an AC/DC record" because I used to work in a record store. So, I never know what's going to come but there are different things they want to know about, different areas; whether it's radio, TV, the music industry or what have you and I'm good with all of it and if there is something that I don't know; I tell them that I can't help them with it or that I can't remember. I'll just be transparent and say that was such a long time ago to be honest with you. Sometimes it unexpectedly gets funny but I think people find it enjoyable because of that stuff and how transparent I am about it and I think people wind up laughing more times than not about it and hopefully for good reason."
Along those lines; does he recall his first ever interview and what it was like?
"You know I get that a lot and I can't really," he readily admitted. "I should have that pinpointed by now but I really don't. I do remember the very first thing that I started doing was some writing right out of high school. I do remember that I went to this show in New York and it was in a club called Club Manhattan and I remember this because it was not a good experience (laughs). There was a Japanese metal band called Loudness; which still exists today that I was a fan of and I don't remember if I was doing this for print or if it was my earliest days of radio but I'd brought a little micro-cassette recorder and I went on their bus and sat down with a guitar player and the singer to do a 10-minute interview. I did it and I remember holding rule micro-cassette and being excited that I had finally done it and then I got in the car and to drive home and I went to listen to it and there was nothing there. The entire interview that I'd done was never documented because I just wasn't used to the recorder and I held the wrong button and so, the interview just didn't go all that well because I wasn't technically able to record it. It was kind of a throwback to the first time I ever opened a microphone on a radio show and I did a break and I was like ,wow , I did ok for my first break only to find out that I turned on the wrong microphone (laughs). I turned on the one on the other side of the console and people just heard about 45 seconds of dead air. So, that was my first radio break. So, yeah, those are not good first experiences; it's amazing I survived (laughs)."
