Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...3/2/23

Rock On! This Week

“Dinosaur” is a little bit of a throwback to something we’ve been doing for a while, it's a high energy rock record, something that longtime Theory fans are going to find recognizable" says Theory of a Deadman bassist Dean Back"So, we're excited for it to get out to the fans and for them to hear the material. We got to record it over in Stockholm, Sweden for three weeks and then we finished it in London; it was a blast to record and it turned out fantastic and we can't wait for people to hear it.”

Canadian rockers Theory of a Deadman have been making music since 1999 when they formed in North Delta, British Columbia. Categorized over the years as, "Post-Grunge," "Hard or Alternative Rock," "Alternative Metal" and even "Pop Rock;" it is far easier to say that these gentlemen have a style uniquely all of their own.

Before a recent show at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ, Back discussed their new album, the recording process and the current tour.

“The record is 10 tracks, I think for this album we had written 14 songs and we recorded 10 of them and who knows when the others will see the light of day,” he began with a laugh. "Our singer Tyler (Connolly) comes up with all the ideas and a lot of the music and then we get sent sort of rough ideas of the songs and when we all get together, we hash out the ideas and it sort of comes together. Unfortunately, we all live in different cities now, so a lot of the ideas are sent via email and such but we've been working together for so long now that it just comes natural.”

Recognizing that this is now commonplace in the recording industry; where many recordings are now done through email and tracks are sent from all across the country and the globe and then returned as if the contributors were all gathered in the same studio but when asked if he felt if there was something missing, such as little nuances or hashing out certain parts, even if it meant butting heads; Back was honest in his response.

“Oh, 100 percent, 100% yeah," he stated emphatically. "When we get ideas sitting at home nothing really transpires until we actually get into a room together and really flesh it out; that's where the magic happens and Martin our producer on the last three records; he's a big believer in recording everything. So, a lot of these songs have been recorded for the first time when we played them together as a band and there's this great raw energy on some of the songs and yeah, there's just a lot of magical moments with just us as four guys getting together in a room and playing these tunes.”

"Dinosaur," the band's seventh full-length studio record is due to hit the shelves and streaming sites on March 17 and currently the title-track is their lead single along with "Ambulance" and a third track. Once again, Back explains the rationale behind their release methods.

“It’s not really a new single," he said of "Ambulance," "They call it a “Grab-track” and it’s kind of like a little teaser song for everybody to get excited before the record comes out. “Dinosaur” is still the single right now and actually, we just released "Two of Us Stuck” as another grab-track. So, we have three songs now off the new record that are out there for people to listen to and I’ve been getting lots of great feedback and the album itself comes out on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17.”

“That's the way the music biz works now," he continued, "It's content, content, content; we’ve gotta keep everybody's attention. People’s attention drifts so easily, so you have to stay engaged and give them lots of content and lots of engagement. Then there’s social media, that game is needed and to be stepped up too. So, now it's always about getting exposure and trying to keep in the eyes of the fans. Even if you look at the other genres like pop and stuff, they're not even putting out records anymore; they're just releasing singles and songs. We still believe in recording a full record and these records; they take anywhere from months to years to write all the material and we don't like putting sub-par material out. There are songs that were started to be written at the beginning of the COVID pandemic and that gave us a lot of time to really come up with some great ideas.”

Just days prior to the February 28 show in Sayreville, the band launched their 25 date "Rock Resurrection Tour" and they are looking very much forward to hitting the road; even if there may be some packing challenges.

“We are in Gary IN tonight for the first show and then we're out with the band Skillet and Saint Asonia and it's going to be a killer show," he said with great enthusiasm. "We're excited, we haven't done a lot of touring with either Skillet or Saint Asonia yet but we got to know each other the last couple days during the pre-production and rehearsals and they are all an awesome, awesome group of people and we're excited to hit the road with them. Then after Sayreville we go to Milwaukee and then East Moline, IL. We are sort of up in the cold north right now but we are not going to be here for a long while because then we head to Texas and Arizona. We're all over the place and it's weird too packing for this tour because we go from Milwaukee and Green Bay and then down into Texas and Phoenix, AZ. So, we have to pack clothes for every situation; all four seasons (laughs). We each get 70 minutes so we play straight through. We’ve got a brand-new stage set up, it's big and it rocks; lots of lights and all that fun stuff, lots of stairs and lots of room to jump around on stage and have fun. It has been a while since we put together a big, big stage look like this, so we're excited for people to see it and Skillet too. They always bring their “A” game too and they’ve got a great looking set up as well; it's gonna be a great night of rock.”

"Dinosaur" can be found via Roadrunner Records or through the band's website at https://store.theoryofficial.com/

That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
