“It is a percussion composition like an ambient composition as well that uses ambient sounds from US Interstate Highway Route 4 and also utilizes percussion sounds from a homemade instrument of my own; also, a number of other instruments as well and it is one of two pieces that are being released as part of an introductory LP to my musical sound.”
Julian Calv currently resides in Vermont with roots in New Jersey and a song in his heart and in his case; they are quite unique. You see, Calv is an innovator, a street performer, a composer and multi-instrumentalist who uses a relatively unknown instrument called, the Trimba.
Inspired by a New York City street performer named Moondog, whose Sixth Avenue busking exploits in the 1950s and '60s became the stuff of legend; Calv became intensely interested in the man, his music and how he integrated the Trimba along with the ambient sounds of his environment. Calv has recently done the same and released a new single called "Route 4" with another on its way next month.
“Yes, it's being released in tandem along with another song that's coming out later in March called “Thorn and Roots” and then there's going to be an actual physical vinyl that is going to have both of the songs on it as well," he said enthusiastically. "Then hopefully, sometime later in or maybe around the start of Spring or so it will all be released and this is all through Deko Entertainment.”
“I've only been a percussionist for about the last three years," he continued; "I guess I could say that piano is my first instrument and the percussion instrument that I referred to called the Trimba; which was invented by a man named Moondog, who was very present in the twentieth-century New York City classical music scene. He built a number of his own instruments that he would play in tandem along with symphonic orchestral instruments to accompany his compositions and so I've spent a period of time kind of studying this niche form of percussion playing that Moondog helped pioneer. I continued the tradition in my own unique way now but I started kind of getting more involved with music and I believe it was about 2015 when I started taking piano lessons and it kind of began spinning off from there.”
Driven by a thirst for knowledge and with an instrumental curiosity, he became interested in composing. Calv immersed himself in various studies and in the process diversified his arsenal.
“Well, as I mentioned, I started with playing the piano, which was my main kind of Forte thing. I studied piano into my collegiate years as well but what started driving me towards percussion, was an increasing desire to learn how to write for various other instruments. During my college years, I studied music education and composition and so as part of the compositional studies, I wanted to have a more of a personal approach to understanding how to write for various instruments. So, in tandem with my required piano training, I actually chose to also take lessons on the side for instruments that I wanted to learn how to write for because I figured the easiest way to learn how to write for an instrument, is to go ahead and kind of learn the basics of how to play it. So, it was in my junior year that I took Marimba, Timpani and Snare Drum lessons from our college's percussion professor but at the same time I began learning more about this guy Moondog and his percussion instrument which, there were no places you could go to get a formal education on how he would play his instrument. So, alongside my collegiate studies, I began going into more of an independent study specifically into the music of this guy Moondog and after learning about this instrument that he called the Trimba, which is present in a lot of his music, I knew that I wanted to spend a lot more time understanding how he played this instrument, how he created and how he utilized it. So, in the beginning, it started as me kind of playing more contemporary or more traditional percussion instruments and then I kind of veered off in the other direction of going into this more obscure realm of percussion instruments that were invented by guys like Moondog. There's another composer named Harry Partch who invented a whole bunch of his own percussion instruments which was cool because it was a little like cherry picking and learning about all the ways that he would go about his approach to percussion instruments as well.”
Julian has accomplished much in in a short time period in the percussion realm; so, has he gravitated to one instrument more than another or does he perhaps favor one a bit more in his compositions?
“I love the marimba and I love xylophones but out of all of the percussion instruments; I'm most fond of the vibraphone simply because of the amount of sound you can get out of it. I wouldn't say I play those instruments to a degree that a professional does; I certainly noodle with them but the type of technique that I have actually developed is that I play the Trimba in tandem at the same time along with an instrument called a Balafon, which is very similar to a Marimba but is a lot smaller in size; it originates from Northwestern Africa and is normally tuned like a pentatonic scale. So, the song that's being released in March, “Thorn and Root,” you’ll actually be able to hear what that combined sound sounds like because it's a piece that was written for the Trimba and the Balafon itself. So, I certainly noodle with them and I understand how to write music for those instruments but I don’t play them too heavily.”
Now armed with multiple weapons and inspired by Moondog; how has he incorporated all of this into the singles and the upcoming release?
“When it comes to creating music for me right now in life, I wanted to find a way to take the environment that I currently find myself living in and create a sonic reflection of it so that I could share it with friends and family and share it with anyone else who would love to lend their ear in that direction. The career of Moondog, he took a lot of ambient sounds from the streets of New York City because he was a street performer there and would actually use those sounds along with his Trimba playing; for example, if a car was coming by him as he was doing a performance, he might increase the volume of his playing in tandem with the car so it's almost like he was playing along with the ambience that surrounded him and this is something I love to do as well because I work as a street performer up in Burlington which is a city here in Vermont. I wanted to find a way to take the environment I'm living in and sonically reflect it and since I live right next to Route 4 and I always hear the drone of cars going by and trucks, little bicycles and birds hanging out outside as well, I decided to go ahead and take to the road with my microphone and laptop and I set them up out there for about two hours to go ahead and just record a lot of the ambient sounds going back and forth on the highway. Then I took that over to the two-track studio which is Deko’s studio of choice and where they record much of their things and I recorded the Trimba part and combined the two together into this beautiful little concoction of sound.”
Calv's day gig finds him as an employee of a local coffee shop; something he relishes for the social interaction and as he sees it; the same goes for the street performer side of him as well.
“I love coffee and I love serving coffee as well but alongside that I love doing the street performing in Burlington and I'm actually going to be going out to another town this summer called Brattleboro. So, it's very much a profession as much as it's a hobby as much as it is an avenue for socializing. One of my favorite things about street performing is the fact that I get to meet a lot of strangers every day and a lot of strangers who seem mutually interested in me as I am in them. When I do my street performing, I love to say hello to people as they're walking by which is kind of a skill that's taking a little bit of time to develop; being able to talk and play at the same time but it's one of my favorite things to do because when you begin speaking with someone while you're playing at the same time, they're almost caught off guard initially at the fact that the street performers addressing them and saying; hey, how are you? How's your day going? That's a nice way to reel people in and I’ve had a lot of really wholesome conversations with complete strangers who I have never met before as a result of street performing. So, it's all of those things; it's a hobby, it is a job and an avenue for socializing.”
"Socializing" in Vermont can be far different from doing the same in a climate like the Metro-New York area; how did he find himself in New England?
“That's a great question actually," he said with a slight chuckle. "What initially brought me up here was that my girlfriend got a job working as a music teacher here and she grew up in New England. I grew up in New Jersey but I've always had a fascination with New England culture and so when we had the opportunity to come up here because of her job, we absolutely took it and hopped on up here and I've been really loving it ever since; Vermont kind of feels like its own little micro-country in America if that makes sense. I feel like many places in this country have their hand on your back making you go forward but up here, their hands are in front of you saying whoa, slow down, take your time, you don't need to rush; you know?”
Calv's music is available through the fine people at Deko Entertainment ( https://www.dekoentertainment.com/) who handle a host of Rock, Pop and various other genre artists; where do we find Calv himself.
“Deko is where you can access and be able to buy the music but for any of my music, I'm also currently on many digital streaming platforms just under the name Julian Calv and I'm also present on all social media platforms; Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Twitter; under the tag, juliantrimba, all lower case. Those are my main ways of addressing people in public and then the streaming services are a way of bringing the sound to people.”
That's it for this week! Please continue to support live and original music and until next week....ROCK ON!
