Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...11/3/22

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 11/03/2022

“I think this is our fifth year or sixth year; it would have been our sixth but we had the one year that the world shut down so, the event is called Rock The Vets.”

Darren DeMarco, and his partner Danny Rongo are on a mission, a mission to do good in a world where those who have fought for our freedoms are often left in bad situations. So many times, we see and hear of our nation's veterans struggling with addictions, suicide, unemployment and homelessness and DeMarco made a decision those six years ago, the first of which was enlisting the help of Rongo, to do his part to lessen those struggles.

“Danny is my uncle by marriage, for those of you who don't know," began DeMarco. "Danny and I played in my original project, the Darren DeMarco Band for many years after I recorded my album. We would do a lot of shows but my favorite ones were always festivals where we're giving away to some kind of charity. You go in, you get like an hour or 45-minute set and you go in and crush it and all of the money goes to a good cause. I don't even care about making money, I'd rather play because sometimes it's more rewarding to just play for free and give it away to a good cause and that's what we decided to do when we were making Rock The Vets. I sat down and I said, hey what would I like to make a charity for and I guess I’ve gotten a little bit more political as I’ve gotten older and more appreciative of our veterans; which was something that I kind of came to regret later in life; that I never served myself. So, I decided that I wanted to try to give back in some way to the brave men and women that have served our country and we decided, OK we have a cause so, now let's find a charity and then we ultimately landed on Veteran's Haven North in Glen Gardner, NJ. They are a transitional housing program for homeless veterans; I’ve been in the music business for 20 plus years now and I know a lot of bands. So, it just started out as me calling a bunch of friends and saying, hey I wanna put together this big show and we're going to give all of the money to the vets and we got a bunch of musicians because they are a great bunch of people, who are always out there looking for someone to help.”

Help they did and the event has grown year after year and the donations for Veteran's Haven North have increased as well. The first few years, Rock The Vets would deliver a check to the venue but after the last few, DeMarco says that they found a more "Sensible" way to achieve their goal.

“So, what just makes more sense and what we started doing was, call them and say; how many people do you currently have at the facility? Doing it this way just makes more sense and then we buy everybody gift cards and they have a shuttle that goes to Walmart and they can buy their own stuff. So, we divide up the money evenly, based on how many residents they have at the facility at the time and everybody gets their fair share and then they can go buy whatever they need for themselves and Walmart just happens to be the easiest way to do it because they have a shuttle that goes there and they can get whatever they need for themselves rather than us buying, I don't know, 50 pairs of pants; who knows if half of them are even going to fit. So, it works out better to do it this way I think.”

Many veterans have benefitted from this 100 bed "Temporary home" and training facility and Darren says the good feeling of the event gets even better when he and Rongo deliver the proceeds.

“Saturday November 12th is the date of the event this year and it is at The Pattenburg House which is in Asbury, New Jersey; not Asbury Park. Asbury, NJ is Exit 11 off of Route 78 and this will be our third time holding it at The Pattenburg House which is a fun little place to have a show and it's gonna be a blast. We’ve got six great bands again this year, we do 50/50s, we have all of our merch, we have T-shirts and stickers and all kinds of stuff to try and generate money for the vets. We go out there and we have a good time and that's what it's all about; have a good time and raise a bunch of money and then Danny and I go there and in the past and I'm hoping that we can do it this year; we usually go in and we sit down and we'll either have a meal with them and hand out gift cards and shake everybody's hands or in the past we've actually been able to do a little acoustic performance for them. Things have kind of changed a little bit since COVID so, I'm hoping that the normalcy comes back sometime soon.”

There are two ways one can donate to Veteran's Haven North, the first being to attend the November 12 event and the second is go directly to the facility at https://www.nj.gov/military/veterans/services/vetshavennorth/. DeMarco says they are grateful and ecstatic with either way people may choose to contribute.

Oh, by the way Darren; who are the bands that are donating their time this year?

“We are Rock The Vets on Facebook and we have an event page and all of the information is on there; those interested can find it at https://www.facebook.com/events/1038013586820722 So, if people wish to contribute, they have to come to the show to give us the money. However, if you would like to donate to Veteran's Haven North, you can send them a check directly and just write Rock The Vets in the little notes so that they know it has something to do with us; that would be amazing!  This year we have Cushetank, Craig Sailer Project, we have Untimely Gentlemen; that's my band and we have the Dave Alen Band. We have the Snakeman Runyon Blues Band; the Snakeman is an amazing Blues harp player and we have the Razz Brothers and that's our six bands; not necessarily in that order but everything is going from 3:00 P.M. to midnight and all of the bands get a nice one-hour set. In between we have a little bit of time built in for 50/50s and Danny does a lot of fantastic stuff. He is the emcee and he has a little write-up that he does and talks to everybody in between each of the bands; he talks about homeless vets and all kinds of different statistics that he finds; he's amazing.”

Six bands, helping veterans, charitable donations; what more can one ask? Ah; how about the admission fee?

“We are asking a $10 admission at the door and that's it and that gets you an all-day pass to Rock The Vets. Anything beyond that, such as if you want to buy a couple of T-shirts or stickers or something is always welcome. We always have merch; the bands always have merch and generally everybody just throws in their money (laughs). I like those moments because it definitely is a blast every year and it's always a great time.”
