(SUMMIT, NJ) -- Reeves-Reed Arboretum presents Chromatic Terrain: Contemporary Landscapes by Greg Navratil, an immersive exhibition featuring the work of Oregon-based painter Greg Navratil. The exhibition will be on view in the Wisner House Gallery from January 27 through May 10, 2026, with an opening reception on Sunday, February 8, from 11:00am to 12:30pm.
Known for his richly layered acrylic paintings, Navratil creates dynamic landscapes that balance abstraction with perceptual realism. His expressive use of color and gestural brushwork captures the spirit of the natural world rather than a literal depiction, inviting viewers to experience familiar environments in fresh and unexpected ways.
Navratil works from a renovated historic schoolhouse studio near Seaside, Oregon, surrounded by woods and gardens he affectionately describes as his own “Giverny.” His creative process begins outdoors, where he photographs lush landscapes that later serve as inspiration for his paintings. Viewed up close, his brushstrokes appear spontaneous and abstract; from a distance, they resolve into recognizable forms of trees, foliage, and flowers. The result is a vibrant body of work that bridges observation and imagination.

Chromatic Terrain showcases a captivating selection of Navratil’s contemporary landscapes, which explore the interplay of pattern, light, and color in nature. The exhibition thoughtfully reflects the Arboretum’s evolving garden palette as the grounds transition from winter dormancy into the vitality of spring.
“Navratil’s work resonates deeply with the Arboretum’s mission to connect art and nature,” shared Curator Frank Juliano. “His paintings echo the seasonal rhythms of the gardens while encouraging visitors to slow down and see the landscape in a new way.”
The exhibition is open to the public during regular Arboretum gallery hours, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00am - 4:00pm, except when closed for private events. Reeves-Reed Arboretum is located at 165 Hobart Avenue in Summit, New Jersey.
