Music at Bunker Hill presents the Horszowski Trio

originally published: 09/25/2023

(SEWELL, NJ) -- In its first appearance with Music at Bunker Hill, the Horszowski Trio will present works by Haydn, Bolcom and Dvorak. Of special interest to audiences is the fun connection between the Haydn Piano Trio in E minor and Bolcom’s Introduzione e Rondo "Haydn Go Seek." The concert will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Bunker Hill Presbyterian Church, (330 Greentree Road) in Sewell, New Jersey. Showtime is 3:00pm.

Giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker), the Horszowski Trio has quickly become a vital force in the international chamber music world since their formation in 2011. In 2023, the “Horszowski Trio Prize” was created by the prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, to award piano trio winners.

Tickets are $12 for students with ID and $28 for adults and seniors.

In 2019, the Horszowski Trio made its London debut in a sold-out concert presented by Wigmore Hall. Their success led to a 21-concert-tour of Germany in 2022, and major critics exclaimed: "With all the intensity of expression that the three musicians achieve, they play in a finely-tuned manner; they span gripping musical arcs, work out surprising details, amaze with their interpretive imagination and stylistically confident sensitivity.”

The Trio takes its inspiration from the musicianship, integrity, and humanity of the pre-eminent pianist Mieczysław Horszowski (1892–1993); the ensemble’s pianist, Rieko Aizawa, was Horszowski’s last pupil at the Curtis Institute.  The Horszowski Trio is based in New York City. They are Ensemble-in-Residence at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and of the Leschetizky Association in New York City.

Praised by the NY Times for an “impressive musicality, a crisp touch and expressive phrasing”, Japanese pianist Rieko Aizawa has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, including New York City’s Lincoln Center, Boston's Symphony Hall, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, and Wigmore Hall in London.

At age thirteen, Ms. Aizawa was brought to the attention of conductor Alexander Schneider on the recommendation of pianist Mitsuko Uchida. Schneider presented her in United States début concerts at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall with his New York String Orchestra. She has since established her own unique musical voice.

The youngest-ever participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, she has performed as a guest with string quartets such as the Guarneri Quartet and the Orion Quartet. She is a founding member of the Horszowski Trio and the prize-winning Duo Prism. Ms. Aizawa became artistic director of the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival in Colorado in 2010.

Ms. Aizawa was the last pupil of Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Curtis Institute and she also studied with Seymour Lipkin and Peter Serkin at the Juilliard School. Ms. Aizawa lives in NYC, and she is on the faculty at Bard College and Brooklyn College. Ms. Aizawa is a Steinway Artist.

Born and raised in Berlin, Germany, Ole Akahoshi is known for the rare combination of musical sensitivity and technical mastery, which has earned the admiration of musicians and critics across the globe.

As a soloist he has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s under the direction of Yehudi Menuhin, Symphonisches Orchester Berlin, and the Czechoslovakian Radio Orchestra, among others. The Los Angeles Times praised his performance of the Haydn Concerto “Akahoshi made a large and edgeless tone of a buttered-rum quality, and conquered all the many hurdles of his assignment with panache.”

He was the youngest cellist to be accepted as a student of the legendary Pierre Fournier at the age of eleven. Later, he continued his studies with Aldo Parisot at the Juilliard School and at the Yale School of Music, and with Janos Starker at Indiana University.  He is now the director of the Yale Cellos, a Grammy-nominated ensemble, and is Assistant Professor of Cello at the Yale School of Music.  He is also on the faculty at Manhattan School of Music and at Longy School of Music of Bard College.

Akahoshi joined the Horszowski Trio in 2020.

Since his concerto debut at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, two-time Grammy-nominated violinist Jesse Mills has established a unique career, performing music from classical to contemporary, as well as composed and improvised music of his own invention. The Washington Post claimed, “Mills played [Messiaen] as if he'd just received it from some distant, vast and magnificent reach of the cosmos."

As a founding member of the Horszowski Trio, he has concertized throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, including a sold-out debut at Wigmore Hall in London in 2019. Mills, as a member of the FLUX Quartet, performed music composed during the last 50 years, including frequent world premieres.   As a composer and arranger, he has been commissioned by Columbia University in NYC and Chamber Music Northwest in Oregon.

A co-founder of Duo Prism, with pianist Rieko Aizawa, they earned 1st Prize at the 2006 Zinetti International Competition in Italy, and they are co-artistic directors of the Alpenglow Chamber Music Festival in Colorado. Mills studied at the Juilliard School with Dorothy DeLay, Robert Mann, and Itzhak Perlman.  He lives in New York City, and he is on the faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College and Brooklyn College.

This program is made possible in part by funding from the Gloucester County Cultural and Heritage Commission at Rowan College of South Jersey, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State and the National Endowment for the Arts.
