Asbury Park songstress Natalie Farrell can do it all: jazz, rock, R&B, soul, Latin. But with her latest single, the sexy, slow-burning groove of “All Nighter,” she flexes her pop muscles with the help of co-writer and drummer Joshua Van Ness.

“All Nighter” is the Makin Waves Song of the Week in anticipation of her headlining spot on Oct. 7 at Asbury’s the Wonder Bar.

As the Makin Waves Song of the Week, “All Nighter” also can be heard between 6 and 8 p.m. on Sept. 30 on “Radio Jersey” at ThePenguinRocks.com. If you miss it, you also can tune in any time in the archives at The Penguin or MixCloud.

“Joshua originally approached me with this song as a demo back in 2020,” Natalie said. “We had put it on the back burner for a while due to the pandemic and other projects we were working on. After holding off for a while, Joshua brought it to my attention again earlier this year. It was perfect timing because I had been talking to the band about experimenting more with pop music.

“After sitting down with the band and picking the song apart, I decided to write lyrics that represented a more sensual side of me,” she continued. “It felt weird at first, especially because I was stepping far out of my comfort zone. In the end, however, I knew this would be a good start to not only explore a different side of my music, but a more mature side of me as a musician and performer. We were really excited to bring our creation to Nick Ryan's studio. With his skills in production, mixing, and mastering, he helped make this song what it is today.”

Also a big help to Natalie is husband and bassist Lou Panico, whose solo act will open the Wonder Bar show.
