(MADISON, NJ) -- From November 30 through December 3, 2023, the Madison Community Arts Center presents dance performances by Carolyn Dorfman Dance, Alborada Spanish Dance Theater, Extensions Dance Project,and Drew University Dance.
They start off the weekend celebration on Thursday, November 30 at 7:30pm with performers from the Drew University Dance Department performing original works choreographed by students, led by the internationally-recognized dancer/choreographer Kimani Fowlin. The program includes “Suite 1” an excerpt from Ella’s Trip (2019) - choreography by Camille Moten Rennie; three days for weeping, seven for lamenting - choreography by Raya Smith; ti amo di piú - choreography by Michelle Lombardi; Resurfaced - choreography by Arianna Kozloski; Compulsive Spirals - choreography by Bella Farina; Knocking on Death’s Door - choreography by Peanut Edmonson; and Heart-strings - choreography by Bridget Ryan.

Alborada Spanish Dance Theater performs on Friday, December 1 at 7:30pm. Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre was originally founded in 1965 by Maria Alba who was renowned for her Spanish dance drama works, but it was Artistic Director Eva Lucena who brought to the company a broader perspective of Spanish culture and traditions. It now reaches thousands of people annually through its repertoire which runs from Spanish Gypsy Flamenco and classical works to cross cultural programs that celebrate Hispanic cultural influences and beyond. Artistic Director Eva Lucena-Welch received a “Lifetime Achievement for the Arts” Award from the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the company has been praised by the critics. Robert Johnson called Alborada “mesmerizing” in his Star-Ledger review and the New York Times praised their “impassioned footwork.”

On Saturday, December 2 at 7:00pm, Extensions Dance Project presents Equinox, a performance featuring 17 works choreographed by local dance artists and 17 company members continuing their passion outside of their day-to-day professions

Carolyn Dorfman Dance concludes the weekend of performances on Sunday, December 3 at 4:00pm. Following sold-out performances at the Bickford Theater last spring, Carolyn Dorfman Dance continues to celebrate its 40-year anniversary with audiences at the Madison Community Arts Center. In this intimate setting, Carolyn Dorfman, known for her unique and interactive approach, will guide the audience through elements of her vision, creative process and work. Mastering its physical and dramatic range, this stunning multi-ethnic company of artists, including a few new faces, brings to life work that both uplifts the heart, mind and moves the soul.
