Fall 2023 New Jersey Film Festival to Take Place September 8th through October 8th. (NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- The Rutgers Film Co-op/New Jersey Media Arts Center, in association with the Rutgers University Program in Cinema Studies, will present the Fall 2023 New Jersey Film Festival on Fridays and Sundays from September 8 to October 8, 2023. This marks the festival's 42nd anniversary.

McCarter Theatre presents "Bulrusher". (PRINCETON, NJ) -- McCarter Theatre Center opens their 2023-2024 Theatre Series with Eisa Davis' Bulrusher, a transformational coming-of-age story filled to the brim with passion, humor, and even a touch of magic; on stage in the Berlind Theatre from September 13 – October 7, 2023. Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey presents "Waiting for Godot". (MADISON, NJ) -- The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (STNJ) continues its 2023 Main Stage season with Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Hailed "one of the true masterpieces of the century" by the New York Times, Godot has fascinated and infuriated audiences since it burst upon the world in 1953. This funny, cruel, moving, enigmatic metaphor is "theatre of the absurd" at its most breathtaking pinnacle. The production runs from September 13 – October 1, 2023.

South Camden Theatre Company presents "Alabama Story". (CAMDEN, NJ) -- South Camden Theatre Company presents the New Jersey and Regional premiere of Alabama Story by Kenneth Jones, weekends from September 15 through October 1, 2023. This is a play based on a true story about book banning, a librarian, a state senator, and black and white bunnies. The production is directed by Connie Norwood.

George Street Playhouse presents "The Pianist". (NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- George Street Playhouse presents The Pianist, a play with music, based on the memoir "The Pianist" by Wladyslaw Szpilman and directed and adapted for the stage by Emily Mann (Broadway: A Streetcar Named Desire, Having Our Say, Anna and the Tropics). The Pianist begins previews on September 26, with an official opening night set for September 29. The play runs through October 22. Click here for a feature article on the play.

Avenel Performing Arts Center presents "Thank You For Being So Dead". (AVENEL, NJ) -- The Avenel Performing Arts Center presents Thank You For Being So Dead, a murder mystery, from September 28-30, 2023. Miami, Miami... You've Got Murder! Eschewing the 55+ communities, four women move in together to eat cheesecake, reminisce about a town called St. Olaf and sit at a kitchen table that only seats three. But someone out there wants to tarnish these golden gals for good.

Wednesday, September 27, 2023 - Count Basie Center for the Arts presents Brian Setzer on September 27th. (RED BANK, NJ) -- Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner Brian Setzer has confirmed a 12-date fall tour coinciding with a new solo album due in the upcoming months via Surfdog Records--more details coming soon. Marking his first live shows in over four years, the "ROCKABILLY RIOT" tour will kick off Wednesday, September 27 at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, NJ and includes stops in Nashville, TN (at the historic Ryman Auditorium), Foxwoods Casino, Cincinnati, Chicago (Waukegan) and others before wrapping in Minneapolis (his adopted hometown).

Thursday, September 28, 2023 - The Vogel presents Toad the Wet Sprocket. (RED BANK, NJ) -- The Vogel presents Toad the Wet Sprocket on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 8:00pm. The band is still making new music and touring with the same spirit of independence that started it all over three decades ago and credit their success to the unwavering support of their fans. In their most recent music releases and live performances, the band has continued to stay true to their roots while evolving their sound.

Friday, September 29, 2023 - Princeton University's Music Department premieres the Timbuktu Grooves Festival this Fall 2023 in partnership with McCarter Theatre Center. (PRINCETON, NJ) -- Princeton University’s Music Department presents the Timbuktu Grooves Festival from September 29 – October 1, 2023 led by Olivier Tarpaga, a Lester Horton Award-winning choreographer and director of the African Music Ensembles at Princeton since 2017.

(MORRISTOWN, NJ) -- Mayo Performing Arts Center's 29th season officially begins on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 8:00pm with the Hitting New Heights, a celebration of Broadway, starring Mandy Gonzalez and Javier Muñoz two of Broadway's leading Hispanic performers. Saturday, September 30, 2023 - Count Basie Center for the Arts presents Buddy Guy – Damn Right Farewell. (RED BANK, NJ) -- Count Basie Center for the Arts presents Buddy Guy – Damn Right Farewell on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 8:00pm. At age 86, Buddy Guy is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago's fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Special guest Bobby Rush will open the night.

Saturday, September 30, 2023 - ROCC FEST IV features Jazz Gospel Concert by Alvester Garnett's Artworks Ensemble. (NEWARK, NJ) -- Roseville Outreach Community Corp. (R.O.C.C.) presents ROCC FEST IV on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Roseville Presbyterian Church (36 Roseville Avenue) in Newark, NJ. Monday, October 2, 2023 - Monmouth University's Center for the Arts presents Step Afrika. (WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ) -- Monmouth University's Center for the Arts presents Step Afrika on Monday, October 2, 2023 at 6:00pm in the Pollak Theatre. This show introduces audiences to stepping through both a traditional and contemporary lens. Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities; traditional African dances; and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience.

2023-09-05 to 2023-10-02 | Classic American Tales presents "Tales at the Dormer House" in the fall. (CAPE MAY, NJ) -- Listen to stories by Chester Himes, O. Henry, Katherine Anne Porter, and other well-known American authors while taking in the breeze on the porch of an historic bed and breakfast, drinking lemonade, and enjoying homemade desserts. It's all part of Classic American Tales' (CAT) popular "Tales at the Dormer House" in Cape May, NJ, every Thursday at 4:00pm from September 14 – October 12, 2023.

2023-09-06 to 2023-10-02 | East Lynne Theater Company presents "Love Letters" with a Rotating Cast of Couples with a Connection. (CAPE MAY, NJ) -- Before East Lynne Theater Company (ELTC) revs up its fall lineup, the curtain prepares to close on its summer 2023 Mainstage Season with a six-week run of A. R. Gurney's "Love Letters"– but with a twist. From September 6 to October 14, the play will be performed by a real-life couple with a connection each of the six weeks: three married couples, an engaged duo, and two pairs who share a romantic past.

2023-09-09 to 2023-10-02 | Bergen County Players to Open Season with "Rent". (ORADELL, NJ) -- Bergen County Players (BCP), one of America's longest-running little theater companies, will open its 91st season on September 9 with Jonathan Larson's RENT, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning rock musical that shaped a generation of audiences. Performances begin Saturday, September 9 and will run weekends through Saturday, October 14 at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell with shows on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm.

2023-09-13 to 2023-10-02 | Cape May Stage presents "The Garbologists". (CAPE MAY, NJ) -- Cape May Stage presents The Garbologists by Lindsay Joelle from September 13 to October 22, 2023. Directed by Roy Steinberg, this is an unconventional buddy comedy play that follows two sanitation workers in the cab of a New York City garbage truck. Tasked with picking up what the world has discarded, they learn there's more that binds them than just picking up the trash.

2023-09-15 to 2023-10-02 | PHOTOS from "Sunset Boulevard" at Music Mountain Theatre. (LAMBERTVILLE, NJ) -- Music Mountain Theatre is currently presenting Sunset Boulevard weekends through October 1st. The musical is based on the film and screenplay by Billy Wilder and features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and a libretto by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. This is the twelfth mainstage show of MMT's 2023 season. Photographer John Posada was on hand to take photos.

2023-09-22 to 2023-10-02 | The Barn Theatre presents "Suite Surrender". (MONTVILLE, NJ) -- The Barn Theatre in Montville, NJ kicks off their 96th Season with the rib tickling, side splitting comedic farce Suite Surrender, written by Michael McKeever and directed by Todd Mills of Boonton, running weekends from September 22 to October 8, 2023. The setting is 1942 at the Palm Beach Royale, where we meet two of Hollywood's most famous Diva's Claudia McFadden played by Montclair's Jessi Baden and Athena Sinclair played by Montclair's Rachelle Rennagel.

Wednesday, September 27, 2023 - Newark Arts Festival 2023 To Celebrate 50 Years Of Hip Hop And Cross Cultural Perspectives. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop, with celebrations planned nationwide. Keeping the momentum going this fall is New Jersey's largest city, as the Newark Arts Festival (NAF) 2023 will feature arts and culture events spanning all five wards of Newark from Wednesday, September 27 through Sunday, October 1. The free four-day festival is produced by Newark Arts in association with The Newark Museum of Art and is expected to attract thousands of artists, collectors, aficionados, and creatives.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 - Middlesex County Debuts Cross Community Jazz Festival. It's September. The trees are losing their leaves. The temperature is dropping. Tuesday, September 26, 2023 - RVCC Slates Contemporary Art Exhibition Featuring Work by Two NJ Artists. (BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- Raritan Valley Community College's Arts & Design department will present Here and There, an exhibition showcasing the work of New Jersey artists Chrystofer Davis and Kimberly Witham, September 26-October 24, 2023 in the Art Gallery at the College’s Branchburg campus.

Tuesday, September 26, 2023 - NJCU presents a Panel Discussion: Latin American Art and Politics. Wednesday, September 27, 2023 - Poet Jane Wong to Read from New Memoir About Growing Up in Atlantic City. (GALLOWAY, NJ) -- Jane Wong, whose debut memoir "Meet Me Tonight in Atlantic City" has received rave reviews, will be the first speaker for this academic year at Stockton University's Stephen Dunn Reading Series. The 2023 book is an incandescent, exquisitely written memoir about family, food, girlhood, resistance and growing up in a Chinese American restaurant on the Jersey shore.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 - Have a Swashbuckling Good Time at the Ocean County Library Toms River Branch. (TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- Ever wonder what it was like to be a real-life pirate in the 18th century? The Ocean County Library Toms River Branch will host American Historical Theatre as actor Jill Lawrence brings to life pirate Anne Bonny in an all-ages interactive show, "Swashbucklers and Sea Dogs," on Thursday, September 28, 2023. The event begins at 6:30pm.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 - World premiere play "Child Support" explores emotional and financial repercussions of playing the 'child support game'. (CAMDEN, NJ) -- Urgent, searing and wildly inventive, the world premiere of Child Support by Desi P. Shelton uses humor and hypertheatricality to examine single parenthood and financial responsibility from the points of view of everyone impacted by a broken system. A site-specific, immersive experience set in a typical Camden row house, the action is scored by composer Jamal P. Dickerson and features a live band under the eye of musical director JoJo Streater. Barrymore Award-winner Ozzie Jones directs for an October 13 opening, with performances running through October 28 at Camden Repertory Theatre. Public previews begin September 28.

(TOMS RIVER, NJ) -- The Ocean County College Foundation will welcome author and education scholar Robert Pondiscio to the Main Stage at the Grunin Center for the Arts on Thursday, September 28, 2023. This event is part of the Foundation's Blauvelt Speaker Series. It is scheduled to begin at 11:00am.

Thursday, September 28, 2023 - Hudson Theatre Works presents a Workshop of "Dancing Lessons" by Mark St. Germain. (WEEHAWKEN, NJ) -- Hudson Theatre Works is starting its 2023-2024 season with a workshop of Mark St. Germain's, Dancing Lessons. Friday, September 29, 2023 - Visual Arts Center of New Jersey To Open Fall Exhibitions Focusing on Themes of Dislocation and Migration. (SUMMIT, NJ) -- This fall, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (VACNJ) will present exhibitions of work from Elana Herzog, Sandra Eula Lee, Samantha Batra Mehta, and Jeffrey Gibson. The works presented explore themes of dislocation and migration through the use of repurposed everyday and found materials. All four exhibitions will be on view from September 29, 2023, to February 4, 2024.

Friday, September 29, 2023 - NJPAC presents SNL Comedian Jay Pharoah. (NEWARK, NJ) -- Jay Pharoah will perform at New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 7:00pm. The actor and comedian is one of the industry’s most sought-after leading men. Best known for his spot-on impressions, Pharoah spent six seasons as a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

Friday, September 29, 2023 - Michael Patrick Took That Job and Shoved it to Focus on Music Career and New Release. Friday, September 29, 2023 - 1st Ugly Pancake Comedy Festival. (ASBURY PARK, NJ) -- Ugly Pancake Productions presents its 1st Ugly Pancake Comedy Festival September 29-30, 2023 at several venues with over 30 comics performing! The festival is more than just performances, there are free events, ticketed events, a comedy panel, and headshots for comics. Joe Borzotta and Angelo Gingerelli have booked 100s of comics throughout NJ and NY together and separately over 10 years in shows, open mics, and fundraisers and formed Ugly Pancake Productions to facilitate those events.

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- As part of Jersey City Theater Center’s 2024-25 strategic planning, Executive Producer Olga Levina, will host a conversation with all immigrant artists. Levina, a fellow immigrant who was born in Ukraine and grew up in Belarus is passionate about bringing diverse work to JCTC. The symposium will feature a number of speakers including Singaporean host/producer Jody Doo (Through the Door/2021, The Internet Ruined My Life/2016 and Creepy Country/2015, Producer/Host at Rattlestick Theater 2020-2023, Producer at Spellbound Theatre 2018-Present) and Taiwanese Dennis Yueh-Yeh, Director of Performance, Storytelling & Community at MOCA. The Immigrant Artist Symposium is supported by Healthier JC.

(TUCKERTON, NJ) -- The Lizzie Rose Music Room presents Kiss The Sky, the World's Greatest Jimi Hendrix Tribute, on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 7:30pm. Kiss The Sky meticulously recreates Jimi Hendrix's most iconic concert moments in detail with replica wardrobe, gear and sound. 2023-04-23 to 2023-10-02 | Grounds For Sculpture Exhibition Celebrates Rich Tapestry and Diversity of New Jersey's Indian Diaspora. (HAMILTON, NJ) -- This spring, a Grounds For Sculpture exhibition will present a multi-faceted portrait of the Indian diasporic community in New Jersey, through first-person narratives, images, and objects. Local Voices: Memories, Stories, and Portraits is created in partnership with 15 community members and led by artist, teacher, and journalist Madhusmita "Madhu" Bora. It is one of two concurrent exhibitions that inaugurate the new Perspectives series at GFS and explore the role of creating person-centered exhibitions, ensuring individual and communal agency in the art of storytelling.

2023-04-23 to 2023-10-02 | Exhibition at Grounds for Sculpture Pays Tribute To Spiral Q Organization. (HAMILTON, NJ) -- Grounds For Sculpture will present the site-specific exhibition Spiral Q: The Parade this spring to highlight Spiral Q, a community-based organization now in its 27th year, and its rich history of a take-to-the streets (real and virtual) approach to creating an unflinching and joyous commitment to justice and equality. They are honored to present their first retrospective exhibition showcasing 27 years of community partnerships, creativity, and advocacy. A key part of their tenure at GFS includes a three week residency with Artworks Trenton, building to a public parade at Grounds For Sculpture.

2023-04-24 to 2023-10-02 | New exhibition at Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library showcases objects depicting watershed events during the 1960s U.S. civil rights movement. (PRINCETON, NJ) -- "Nobody Turn Us Around: The Freedom Rides and Selma to Montgomery Marches: Selections from the John Doar Papers" showcases over 30 photographs and documents from two watershed events during the 1960s U.S. civil rights movement: the Freedom Rides of 1961 and the Selma-to-Montgomery marches of 1965. The exhibition runs Monday, April 24 through March 31, 2024 at Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library in Princeton.

2023-06-30 to 2023-10-02 | 40th Ellarsie Open Awards Prizes to 17 Exhibiting Artists. (TRENTON, NJ) -- Seventeen of 109 exhibiting artists received awards during the June 24 Artists and Members Reception for the 40th Ellarslie Open at Trenton City Museum. This year’s edition of the annual juried exhibition showcases 150 artworks by artists from greater Trenton and throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. All of the artwork is available for purchase in the museum or online through September 30, 2023.

2023-07-20 to 2023-10-02 | Amelchenko Gallery presents John Newsom: The Shangri-La Suite and Related Works. (SEA BRIGHT, NJ) -- Amelchenko Gallery presents a solo exhibition in collaboration with John Newsom Studio titled, The Shangri-La Suite and Related Works. The exhibition features ten unique limited edition artist proofs created by Newsom over the span of the past five years. The exhibition runs from July 20 - September 30, 2023 with an opening reception on Thursday, July 20 from 4:00pm-8:00pm.

2023-07-22 to 2023-10-02 | Nassau County Museum of Art presents Modigliani and the Modern Portrait. (ROSLYN HARBOR, NY) -- Wherever and whenever Amedeo Modigliani's paintings go on view, crowds gather, experts turn out to debate, social media lights up and auction records fall. This Modern master personally changed the history of the portrait, adding the emotional and painterly power that has inspired generations since his untimely demise, the archetypal story of the doomed Bohemian genius. The Nassau County Museum of Art presents Modigliani and the Modern Portrait from July 22-November 5, 2023. Curated by Dr. Kenneth Wayne, the world's leading Modigliani scholar (founder of The Modigliani Project that researches the authenticity of works), this show will feature several spectacular paintings by the master, including the world premiere of two newly confirmed Modigliani paintings unveiled on this occasion.
