(PLUMSTED TOWNSHIP, NJ) -- A letter written in 1927 by a young sightless American to a woman in Switzerland training dogs for police and military work led to the creation of The Seeing Eye®. Learn about this pioneering New Jersey philanthropic enterprise and meet trainers and dogs at the Ocean County Library Plumsted Branch on Monday, July 14, 2025. The event begins at 6:30pm.
Morris Frank was the young American and Philadelphia-born Dorothy Harrison Eustis was the dog trainer who authored the article that motivated him. In 1929, they co-founded of the Morristown-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.
The Seeing Eye® is the world’s oldest school engaged in training dogs to guide people who have no sight. The group also takes an active role in public policy regarding service animals.
Trainers will explain their dog selection and training methods, and instructions given to recipients to care for the canines that enhance their independence, self-confidence and dignity.
