Art 150 presents "Not Your Gentle Flower"

originally published: 06/03/2022

(JERSEY CITY, NJ) -- Art 150, sponsored by Pro Arts Jersey City, hosts a new exhibit: Not Your Gentle Flower - Work by J.Heloise & Alexandra Alvarez on display Saturdays and Sundays 1:00pm-4:00pm and by appointment from June 3-26, 2022 at 150 Bay Street Lobby, Jersey City, NJ, Not Your Gentle Flower is a bold artistic exploration of the “female” experience.

As two female artists operating in the midst of a pandemic, Alexandra Alvarez and J.Heloise have known determination and struggle. Their bodies of work reflect years of studying the hu- man condition, and emerging with new truths, new stories - translated through paint.

The ART150 community at 150 Bay St has selected them to display work at the ART150 gallery in the lobby of the studio building during June. They have chosen work that reflects aspects of the female experience that are less discussed, and to reinterpret femininity according to lived and observed experience. This exhibition is a statement — not just about “female empower- ment” but about what we learn when we set foot into another’s life.

With a background in fashion design & illustration, J.Heloise has gone from fashion illustrator to Artist over the course of her 17 years as a watercolor painter, seeking and finding new modes of expression that transcend cultural norms. Her fascination with movement has led her to study dancers, martial artists. She is also the creator behind an eponymous line of greet- ing cards.

The Venezuelan-born artist Alexandra Alvarez, whose background includes advertising indus- try creative work, will be displaying work in acrylic. She is inspired by the vibrant colors of her Caribbean, the mysticism and indigenous cosmology, her life as a woman, as a mother, and as an immigrant, as well as her passion for philosophy, psychology, and humanity.

Their yearly programming includes exhibitions and professional development events that introduce curators, collectors, and the general public to their members and their work. Theirsignature “Meet the Curators” portfolio review event has served as an exhibition springboard for many of the participating artists, and their popular “Salons” bring groups of artists together for collaboration and peer to peer critics.
