"Becomes a Woman" Brings a Hidden Gem to Life 
In the circle of the arts, hearing the name Betty Smith usually brings the book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn to mind. This classic novel captures the life story of Francie Nolan's coming of age as a woman in working class Brooklyn in the early 1900's. However, Smith had another part of her writing life that is seldom mentioned. That part is her keen interest in play writing and the theater.
Performing Arts School at bergenPAC to Hold Auditions for "Evita"

RVCC Professor Receives Local Arts Grant for Concert Series 
(BRANCHBURG, NJ) -- Dr. Anna Keiserman, a pianist and Assistant Professor of Music at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, has received a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Local Arts Program Grant from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission for the MOZAIKA concert series.

Stephane Wrembel to release "Django New Orleans" on Water Is Life Records 
(MAPLEWOOD, NJ) -- Acclaimed jazz guitarist Stephane Wrembel will release his 17th recording, Django New Orleans, on May 5, 2023, on vinyl, CD and all streaming platforms on his own Water Is Life Records. The release coincides with the 20th anniversary of his annual event, Django A Gogo Music Festival and Guitar Camp, which takes place May 3-7, 2023. Stephane Wrembel’s Django New Orleans will perform twice during the festival; Friday, May 5 at The Woodland in Maplewood, NJ, and Saturday, May 6 at The Town Hall.

Mayor Baraka Unveils Harriet Tubman Monument 
(NEWARK, NJ) -- Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka was joined by First Lady Tammy Murphy, State Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz, and numerous other dignitaries on March 9, 2023 to unveil a new monument honoring Harriet Tubman and pay homage to the city's role in the Underground Railroad along with the Black liberation movement's rich history in the area. The ceremony also observed Harriet Tubman Day, which is March 10th. The monument stands in Harriet Tubman Square, at the intersection of Washington and Broad Streets, in downtown Newark.

Newark Artists and Prominent Actors to Celebrate Literary Legacy of Philip Roth During Weekend-Long Festival 
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center in collaboration with the Newark Public Library will present Philip Roth Unbound, a weekend-long festival that celebrates the life, legacy and work of novelist and Newark native. Over the course of three days, beginning Friday, March 17 and concluding Sunday, March 19, 2023, NJPAC will host a series of events, featuring more than 40 prominent writers, actors, artists, journalists and intellectuals in the nation. Designed to appeal to audiences of all backgrounds, the festival will feature star-studded stage readings, panel discussions and a comedy showcase. The program is designed to explore the significance and impact of Roth's unique literary legacy, using his writings as a springboard to explore broader questions about life in America today.
