"I'm living the dream," says legendary folk artist Tom Rush with a laugh, "I'm having a good time so everything is great."
There are musicians and there are musicians whose talents and/or influence are so strong that their impact reverberates for not only their entire career but for decades and beyond. The type of musician who leaves an indelible mark on not only their fans and audiences but other musicians as well; Tom Rush is such an entity.
Largely credited with shaping the folk music movement of the 1960s and heavily influencing the likes of James Taylor, Garth Brooks and many more; he was also a driving force in the careers of JoniMitchell and Jackson Browne as well and now this legendary artist readies himself for a performance on this Sunday June 4 at the The New Hope Winery in New Hope, PA.
"I do have a show at the winery," he said once again with an enthusiastic laugh. "I have an 8 p.m. show and it's with Matt Nakoa, my super talented friend who I've been performing with for about eight or nine years now and he just keeps getting better. I'm hoping that when he's playing stadiums that he lets me open the shows. He is now a monster guitar player as well as a monster keyboard player and singer and songwriter and the girls all say he's cute, which is why I hate him (laughs)."
"I remember it was a lot of fun the last time we played this venue," he went on. "The sound was good, the crowd was great and the wine was good too. I'm going to be doing some brand new songs off of this brand new album. The album is a little bit; I'm not going to say scattered but they are all songs that I wrote and some are brand new and others I wrote a long time ago and they had never been recorded before. Matt heard the scratchy demos and loved them and said, "We've got to do these." So, there is one that I wrote for my daughter when she was 18 months old and she's now 24 and there is another one that I probably wrote about 40 years ago called "Glory Road" that only existed on an air check from a show with Gene Shay in Philadelphia from way back; I miss him. There is another that I wrote for my boys back in '83 but at the winery we'll be doing some brand new stuff and of course we'll be doing the old favorites too because that's what people come to hear, they come to hear the songs they know. So, I'll be doing a little of this and a little of that and as always, I'm pretty scattered in terms of doing songs that make you cry and make you laugh; basically I'm after emotional whiplash (laughs). We do about an hour for the first set then a 20 minute intermission and then an hour or a little less for the second set. Matt will be playing guitar and piano, he'll be bringing his synthesizer as well as doing some songs on his own; he steals the show and I pay him to do it; what's wrong with me? (laughs). I'm glad he does because he's really, really good."
Wait! Did he say; "Brand new record?" Given the nature of music post-pandemic; was this something that was started before, during or after that moment in time? Rush says it was his buddy Nakoa that took the bull by the horns and got the process started.
"We're in the process of making a brand new record; Matt is also a monster producer; I think he got tired of hearing me talk about maybe someday making another album so he just went ahead and booked the studio and some musicians. So, all of the basic tracks are done and we're working on the mixes now and they're really sounding good; I'm kind of excited. Matt ran the musicians past me and he said, "This woman is a really great Lap Steel player" and I took his word for it and he was right and I didn't argue with him.Then he picked the drummer and the bass player and then some of the other musicians are people that I already knew and then we went down to a place called The Carriage House near New York City and we really got some good stuff and I'm really excited about it."
"Matt was also smart enough to hire a video guy to video tape everything," he continued. "So, we'll have video of all of the songs and since nobody buys DVDs anymore, we'll at least have something to put up on the internet and hopefully pique people's interest. What's getting to be a bit of a problem is that there is nothing concrete to physically hold onto; the whole digital thing. I was just reading a royalty statement from BMI and if a thousand people play your song on Spotify what do you think you should get? A penny, a penny is what you get for a thousand plays; somebody is getting rich but it's not the artist. To be honest, it doesn't much matter because with AI coming along they can clone you and have a computer making Tom Rush records. Who needs reality (laughs)? The end result, with AI putting so many people out of business; I mean you can get a college degree now without even having to go to classes because you can get AI to write your essays; basically, I don't think they are thinking it through because all of these people that they are putting out of work are also customers who will not have any money to buy their stuff anymore. There's a story about how Henry Ford used to pay his workers enough so that they could buy a car; which I think was smart."
Speaking of being out of work; has that same post-pandemic environment been favorable to him? Rush seems to think so but he was also resourceful during 2020 and beyond.
"The places that I play, performing arts centers for the most part, most of them survived. Actually, things just got crazy busy because I had many gigs which were postponed and then postponed again and then finally when things started to brighten up; my agent was booking three years worth of gigs into six months; which was kind of strenuous. Through the pandemic I was doing this thing called "Rockport Sundays" online and we had a lot of guests come on and they were little short episodes;15 minutes that were posted every Sunday and they'd stay up for eight weeks.That was a subscription series and that actually saw me through the pandemic because not only did it pay the rent but it also gave me a reason to keep being creative as well as an audience to play for so, that was good."
New tour schedule, new record and a new lease on bringing his craft to the masses once again where he can relate to audiences face to face as opposed to through a camera lens and although he said he will be performing some songs from the new album; does that album even have a title yet?
"We don't know yet actually," he said with an amused tone. "Matt is thinking; there are two songs on the album that have the same line in them and I think it's a good line, "The garden is old, the flower's new" so Matt wants to call it "Garden old flower's new" because I'm old but the songs are new. I'm hoping the album will be out here in June; at this point I'm not sure what label it's going to be on. There is one label that desperately wants it but I think I'm going to shop it around a little bit. The music is almost done but I don't have a clue what the artwork or cover design is going to be but I'm hoping that the CD will be out in July and the LP will be about a month later; people buy vinyl; so why not make it?
Rush says that his touring schedule is far different now than it was years ago and he even shared a funny anecdote from his years on the road.
"I don't do tours anymore, I do "Tour-lets," he said with another laugh, "I just made that up.The first few shows are without Matt but he'll be with me in New Hope and then I've got five days off and we play Salem, MA and then I've got some extended time off which will be kind of nice. Four shows in a row is about where I max-out these days; especially if there is substantial travel from show to show. I love doing the shows but the travel is the hard part; the way I look at it, I get paid to travel, I do the shows for free. I get paid to have fun; how sweet is that? I've asked some of my guests on "Rockport Sundays;" what's the weirdest gig you ever did? There were some great stories that came out but one of the things that popped into my head; I was playing at the Boston Seaquarium and when you come in, the entryway has a great big penguin pit. They had me up on a riser by the railing facing into the penguin pit and the audience was standing all around the railing around the pit and the problem was; the penguins liked to sing along. Some of them would bray like a donkey and every time I started singing, they'd all chime in and you couldn't hear a word that I was singing and when I was talking they would all shut up but as soon as I started singing, they'd all light up again."
One thing is certain, nobody will be braying like donkeys at The New Hope Winery this Sunday evening but Rush will entertain with his stories and "Emotional Whiplash" as only he can.
