Rock On! This Week's Sound Bites...9/1/22

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 09/01/2022

"September 30th and it's called “Radiance” and it’s a really cool record, I'm really happy and proud of it. Two songs have been released so far off of the album; “Radiance” which is the title track and it's a very heavy melodic track and then “Shine On” is kind of a barn-burner track. “Shine On” is the second single and it just came out last month and then prior to our show on September 7th at the Landis in Vineland; we are going to be releasing “Hypnotize Yourself” from the album and you're gonna hear all of that stuff live as well as four new songs live and four songs from our last album, you’ll hear all of it live.”

The Dead Daisies guitarist Doug Aldrich has spent time in a couple of bands which may sound familiar; unless of course you have no recollection of the '80s, which would be a shame because this former member of both Dio and Whitesnake has graced some of the largest stages in the world and is now very excited about the aforementioned new release from the band and their upcoming September 7 show at The Landis Theater in Vineland, NJ.

Armed with the new release and a new line-up due to front man and lead vocalist John Corabi being busy with Motley Cue, Aldrich says the band is stronger and more ready to rock than ever.

“Yeah, but it's all amicable, he is a brother for life" he began about Corabi's departure, "I don't think he's back with them entirely; I think it’s just something where he buried the hatchet with Nikki Sixx and it’s all good. So, yeah, Ben Grosse produced the new record and Ben is a great guy and he has done a really great job on it; it was really great working with Ben on the last album, “Holy Ground” and we wanted to make a record quickly and we know he did such a great job; we just made sure he was available and then we just got to it. So, now we have Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple and Black Country Communion) on lead vocals and bass, John and Marco are no longer with us; Brian Tichy (Whitesnake and Foreigner) still on drums, David Lowy the founder of the band and myself on guitar and Glenn Hughes IS the voice of rock.”

This time around, the band is only doing a a short stint here in the U.S. after completing a strong and very successful run in Europe and with "Radiance" due out on September 30, Aldrich says they are leaving it all on the stage.

“Actually, it’s just three weeks of shows we’ve got the Landis, a couple shows in Virginia, we've got a show in Illinois, we’re playing in Portland Oregon and Seattle Washington, Los Angeles and we’ve got Enough’s Enough with us on this tour as well and in Los Angeles we’re going to have a special guest with us; Gilby-Clarke of Guns N’ Roses so, that's gonna be fun. The Jersey show is a very special, it’s a great venue and I really want to encourage everyone to come out and kick off the Fall and it's kind of a hometown gig for me and Brian Tichy. I grew-up in the Philadelphia area and Brian grew up in Jersey. I'm gonna have a bunch of friends out so I can't wait to see everybody and the Landis has a great staff, the sound is killer and yeah, it’s gonna be awesome. Our shows run around 90 minutes plus maybe more and that’s if they can get us off stage; it's usually around 90 minutes and we're gonna play all this stuff as well as the favorites.”

Not too long ago, the group released their version of Grand Funk Railroad's, "We're An American Band" which excited audiences all over the globe; will we be hearing any new versions of old tunes this tour and how do they write their material these days?

“I’m not sure if we’ll be playing that song," Aldrich said hesitantly. "I'm not sure but we're very excited about the set and mainly featuring the new album and the last album with Glenn. Glenn and I usually start the basic foundation and David Lowy had a couple of riffs that I was really excited about so I helped him round those off and then gave them to Glenn and he topped and tailed them. So, it’s really the three of us that are doing it and then Brian came in and Brian just brings everything up a notch. He's one of those players that basically makes anything and any song he's on a better sounding song because of him. So, he's a big part of the sound you’re going to hear on the album.”
