(MAPLEWOOD, NJ) -- The Strollers will hold auditions via ZOOM for Art by Yasmina Reza on October 28-29 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Rehearsals will start November 1 with a read through and take place 3-4 times per week, based on cast availability. All rehearsals conducted via Zoom The performance will also be presented via ZOOM on Friday, November 20 at 7:30pm. The play is translated by Christopher Hampton and the performance will be directed by Dena Daniel.
In the play, Marc, Serge, and Yvan have been great friends for decades and know each other very well. But when Serge buys a very expensive painting -- huge, unframed, and all white -- Marc can't believe it isn't Serge's idea of an intellectual joke. He tries to win Yvan's support, but Yvan has his own problems and won't pick a side. The painting soon becomes a metaphor as the friends stumble into the ravines that have developed unnoticed, or unacknowledged, between the disparate paths their lives have taken. Lines are drawn, and the friends must decide how (or whether) to surrender old territory to find new common ground.
To audition, contact the company to secure your 10-minute audition slot. Tell them if you prefer October 28 or October 29 and if you are interested in a particular role. Character List:
Marc (65ish): self-proclaimed aesthete and intellectual, Marc somewhat contradictorily has little appreciation for modern art. Always having fancied himself mentor to the younger men, a void opens up inside him as he wrestles with the possibility that the "student" has outgrown the teacher.
Serge: (55ish): well-to-do, divorced, and overcompensating, Serge has always relied on his two best friends for company and comfort. Influenced by Marc’s aesthetic obsessions but desirous of making a statement, he purchases a ridiculously expensive painting to (perhaps unknowingly) declare his aesthetic equality, which Marc is not having.
Yvan (45ish): meekest of the trio and something of a pet in the eyes of the older men throughout his aimless but entertaining youth, Yvan is drawn haplessly into the argument as a kind of referee. Already stressed out and conflicted about his upcoming nuptials and ill-fitting attempts at normalcy, he desperately wants Marc and Serge to make up already so that he might, finally, get a little of their attention for himself.
