(MONTCLAIR, NJ) -- Steven Wright, one of the funniest comedians of all time, is coming to The Wellmont Theater on Thursday, June 26, 2014. He was named the 23rd greatest stand-up comics on Comedy Central's list of the top 100 of all time and was voted amongst the top 50 comedy acts by fellow comedians and comedy insiders in a 2005 poll to find The Comedian's Comedian. He was also the first inductee to the Boston Comedy Hall of Fame in 2008.
He's known for turning phrases inside out and finding the absurdity in everyday conversation while offering touches of philosophy within lines like:
"A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths."
"There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot."
"Whenever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories."
"For my birthday I got a humidifier and a de-humidifier... I put them in the same room and let them fight it out."
"It doesn't make a difference what temperature a room is, it's always room temperature."
His lines are spoken with a slow, deadpan delivery. At times, it looks as though he's so laid back he must be stoned on stage, and some of his observations were no doubt created under the use of some sort of substance. He's had a cult following ever since his 1985 album, "I Have A Pony" was first released and nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album.
In 1989 he and fellow producer Dean Parisot won an Academy Award for their 30-minute short film, "The Appointments of Dennis Jennings".
In 2006, Wright produced his first standup-special in 16 years, "Steven Wright: When the Leaves Blow Away" on Comedy Central. The following year, he released a follow-up to his first comedy album, "I Still Have A Pony". This release also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album.
Wright's show is scheduled for 7pm on June 26. The Wellmont Theatre is located at 5 Seymour Street in Montclair, NJ.
