State Theatre Presents Will Downing

originally published: 03/30/2015

State Theatre Presents Will Downing(New Brunswick, NJ) -- State Theatre presents Will Downing, the “Prince of Sophisticated Soul,” on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 7pm. This show will include some of Downing’s biggest hits such as “I Try,” “Wishing on a Star,” “A Million Ways,” and “I Can't Make You Love Me.” Tickets range from $35-65.

Celebrating an incredible 25 years of recording excellence in 2013 with his 16th album, Silver, Downing has firmly established himself as one of the most consistent performers of his era and a leading artist of romantic, soulful music. The Grammy® nominated artist released his breakout album, A Dream Fulfilled, in 1991. This disc not only showcased his distinctive signature baritone vocals but also his skills as a song interpreter as he handled such diverse songs as War’s “The World Is A Ghetto,” Paul Davis’ “I Go Crazy,” and Angela Bofill’s “I Try.” Both the “I Try” single and album hit the Urban Top 25 Charts and earned critical acclaim.

In the 90s and early 00s, Downing recorded frequently on multiple record labels. He became a regular at the top of the contemporary jazz charts and released a number of solid albums. Arguably the best effort of this era was a jazz infused album of duets with saxophonist Gerald Albright, Pleasures of the Night, while his lone album on Motown, All the Man You Need, received a 2001 Grammy® nomination for Best Traditional R&B Album.

With 17 releases already under his belt, Downing is now releasing album number 18, entitled Chocolate Drops in 2015. In this new album, Downing assembles a collection of originals coupled with some R&B classic interpretations.
