originally published: 07/13/2017

State Theatre Presents Neil Sedaka(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- State Theatre New Jersey presents Neil Sedaka on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 8:00pm. Sedaka will perform hits such as “The Diary,” “Calendar Girl,” “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” and more. Tickets range from $35-$95.

Neil Sedaka’s passion for music really began when he received a piano scholarship to Juliard School of Music in 1947. By the time he graduated high school, Sedaka and his high school friends formed The Tokens, a group of Brooklyn boys that released five hits including “Don’t Go,” “While I Dream,” and the famous “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Sedaka was also one of the founders of the “Brill Building” sound which came out of New York City in the late 1950’s. This specific sound could be heard in the music of Carole King, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, and many others. RCA Victor then signed Sedaka to be a solo singer recording hit songs like “The Diary,” “Calendar Girl,” and his signature hit “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” which peaked at number one for two weeks in 1962.

Aside from performing, Sedaka is also a songwriter, sitting at his piano and writing hit songs for Connie Francis, Jimmy Clanton, The Monkees, and more. Some of the songs he wrote for other artists include hits such as “The Hungry Years,” “Workin’ on a Groovy Thing,” and “Solitaire.” During a new phase of his career, Sedaka co-wrote Captain and Tennille’s song “Love Will Keep Us Together” in 1972, which peaked at number one and won the Grammy Award® for Record of the Year.

Sedaka also went into producing children’s music with an album titled, Waking Up Is Hard To Do, which would feature kid’s versions of his hit songs. Most recently, this legend released two acclaimed albums, I Do It For Applause and The Real Neil, both of which include 63 years of music by Sedaka in just a few tracks.
