State Theatre presents Macbeth

originally published: 03/31/2015

State Theatre presents Macbeth(New Brunswick, NJ) —State Theatre presents The Acting Company in Macbeth on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at 8pm. One of his darkest and most powerful tragedies, Shakespeare dramatizes the psychological and political impact of when evil is chosen to satisfy the ambition for power in Macbeth. Tickets range from $35-45.

This performance will include Gabriel Lawrence as Macbeth, Angela Janas as Lady Macbeth, Andy Nogasky as Banquo, Adam Mondschein as Macduff, and Ian Gould as King Duncan.

This sleek, accessible, and characteristically bloody Macbeth will thrill, startle, and satisfy—the perfect presentation for both first timers as well as Shakespeare buffs. After a trio of witches prophesize that he will become King of Scotland, Macbeth’s ambition, spurred to action by his wife, leads to his murdering King Duncan and ruling tyrannically through an era of bloodbaths and a civil war. Arrogance, paranoia, guilt, madness, and death consume Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy.

Macbeth reflects on his actions in some of the most sublime soliloquies in the Shakespearean canon as he rushes headlong towards his demise. This is a poisonous world where, as the witches intone at the very start, “fair is foul and foul is fair,” where values are reversed and nothing is what it seems to be. From the prophecies of the Weird Sisters to the silent appearance of Banquo’s ghost, the supernatural plays a central role in this historically-based tragedy. But so does psychology and Shakespeare focuses on the disintegrating mental state of the murderous king. With almost no diversionary subplots, Macbeth is thrillingly direct in its stark demonstration of the corrupting power of evil.
