State Theatre Announces 2018-19 Dance Series

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) -- State Theatre New Jersey has unveiled its 2018-2019 Dance Series, featuring six renowned dance companies and one tap dancing legend. State Theatre New Jersey’s Dance Series kicks off on October 9 with the international Irish step-dancing sensation Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games.   



Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games - Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 8:00pmSince its premiere more than 20 years ago, the Irish step dancing show Lord of the Dance has become an international sensation. Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games is the newest show by Michael Flatley. With music composed by Gerard Fahy, Dangerous Games features an intoxicating mix of dance and music that fuses the traditional with the contemporary in a classic tale that showcases the exceptional talent of the cast. The show features cutting edge technology including a giant radiant flat screen that spans the width of the stage, special effects lighting, dancing robots, and world champion acrobats.  Tickets: $29-$69



Ballet Hispánico - Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 8:00pmPROGRAM: Línea Recta (Annabelle Lopez Ochoa), Con Brazos Abiertos (Michelle Manzanales), and 3.Catorce Dieciséis (Tania Pérez-Salas). Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s premier Latino dance organization, has been bringing communities together to celebrate and explore Latino cultures through innovative productions, transformative dance training, and community engagement for more than 48 years. The Company is a group of highly trained professionals who perform the works of Latino choreographers for audiences around the world. Ballet Hispánico’s repertory explores the diversity of Latino cultures and brings innovative ways of experiencing and sharing a cultural dialogue. Representing a multitude of nationalities, their artists reflect the ever-changing face of our nation. Tickets: $19-$49



Coppélia - American Repertory Ballet - Friday, October 19, 2018 at 8:00pm. A delightful evening of ballet fun for the entire family! Coppélia is one of the few comedic ballets in traditional repertoire, where brilliant classical dance meets a delightfully comic narrative. Franz, a soon-to-be married young man from the village, becomes infatuated by a life-like doll created by the eccentric inventor Dr. Coppelius. Hilarity ensues over love, infatuation, and mistaken identity.  Tickets: $35-$65



Parsons Dance - Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 8:00pmOne of the most popular dance companies in the country, Parsons Dance prides itself on its crowd-pleasing, accessible works “noted for their wit, split-second shifts in tempo and mood, and sheer exuberance” (The Washington Post). Choreographed by David Parsons, eight dancers of talent and passion bring sexy athleticism, exuberant personality, and joyous movement to each and every performance. Tickets: $19-$49

Nutcracker - American Repertory Ballet - Friday, December 21, 2018 at 7:30pm; Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 2:00pm & 7:00pm; and Sunday, December 23, 2018 at 1:00pm & 5:00pm. American Repertory Ballet brings the beloved classic Nutcracker to the stage with Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score, stunning sets, thrilling choreography, and a cast of more than 100 performers. A holiday tradition for more than 50 years, ARB’s is one of the longest continuously running Nutcracker productions in the nation. Directed by Artistic Director Douglas Martin, ARB’s professional company will be joined by select students from Princeton Ballet School to tell the story of a young girl named Clara and how a mysterious gift from her Uncle Drosselmeyer brings about enchanted dreams and fantastical scenes. Tickets: $25-$65

A mesmerizing interplay of percussive genius featuring Glover’s six-piece band and company of dancers will illuminate original grooves and compositions that only a percussive master could. All Funk’d Up is the newest innovative expression from Tony Award®-winning choreographer and dancer (Broadway’s Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk). Celebrating his 35th year as a performing artist, New Jersey native, tap dancer, choreographer, and producer Savion Glover’s Broadway and film credits include The Tap Dance KidBlack & BlueJelly's Last JamBring in 'da Noise Bring in 'da Funk, the movie Tap with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr., Spike Lee's Bamboozled, and Happy Feet and Happy Feet 2, which he choreographed.  Tickets: $25-$55



Swan Lake - Russian National Ballet - Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 2:00pm & 8:00pmThe Russian National Ballet brings the world’s most beloved ballet to life! Presented by a vibrant company deeply dedicated to the timeless tradition of classical Russian ballet, this full-length fantasy balletthat tells the story of a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s cursefeatures choreography by Petipa and an unforgettable score by Tchaikovsky. Tickets: $19-$49



Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company - Thursday, April 11, 2019 at 8:00pmBill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance-theater world, makes their State Theatre debut! Known for performing repertory widely varied in its subject matter, visual imagery and stylistic approach to movement, the company's program will include the dance piece, A Letter to My Nephew. It is a music and dance driven study using movement motifs that reference a troubled life in show business, the sex trade, and the hard job of growing up. This is a celebration and meditation on the life of Mr. Jones' nephew, Lance T. Briggs. The piece is accompanied by a stunning score by composer Nick Hallett, which he performs with baritone Matthew Gamble. The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company was founded in 1982 out of an 11-year collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane (1948–1988). During this time, they redefined the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form and social commentary that would change the face of American dance. The company has been acknowledged for its intensely collaborative method of creation that has included artists as diverse as Keith Haring, Cassandra Wilson, The Orion String Quartet, the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center, Fred Hersch, Jenny Holzer, and Robert Longo, among others. Tickets: $19-$49
