ROCK ON! This Week's Sound Bites...2/12/15

By Danny Coleman

originally published: 02/12/2015

He was known as Ted, Teddy, Teddy Z and even Flash to some but to the musicians in the Trenton area; he was known as a friend and major supporter of their craft. Sadly, Ted's untimely and unexpected passing has rocked all of those who knew him. On Sunday February 15 at noon, fourteen bands and solo artists are scheduled to pay tribute to the man who loved music, his patrons and bringing quality entertainment to the Trenton area.

"The Ted Z Memorial Jam/A Celebration of a Man's Life," will flood the Ivy Tavern located at 3108 South Broad Street in Hamilton, NJ with memories and music from some of those who played the Cedar Pub, better known as "Teddy's" on a regular basis. "A musical tribute for a champion of local music," says one of the event's organizers Frank Clayton who began performing at Cedar Pub several years back with his duo partner Gary Anderson.

Clayton, along with Honey Spot Blvd. members Jessica Paris and Rusty DiPasquale along with Rock On Radio host Danny Coleman quickly put this "Memorial Jam" together. "I was contacted by the local duo of Alright Alright," explained Coleman; "They immediately reached out, I mean within hours of Ted's passing and stated that they wanted to be part of any benefit or memorial that I heard of or was organizing for Ted. I thought, you know what? Why Not? I know that Honey Spot Blvd. was one of Ted's favorite acts that played at Cedar Pub so I reached out to Rusty and Jessica, then Frank and they responded with an emphatic Yes! We had a meeting at the Ivy Tavern and had a list of bands, who, as it turned out, had contacted the others as well and within an hour or so the show was put together."

The outpouring of affection from the local music community continues to flow in; much like the beers that Ted would draw six nights a week. Musicians and patrons alike have inquired about a tribute honoring the man whose attempts to revive the music scene are well documented. "Teddy Zegarski was an instrumental part in keeping local music alive and rocking in Mercer County and was just a sweetheart of a guy. He always had a kind thing to say and a mischievous smile on his face. As one of the new kids on the block in the local music scene, we are very honored to be able to do a small part to honor him. He will be sorely missed," says Nicolo Giangrasso who often performed there as a duo when Ted first revived Cedar Pub and will be performing with his new project the Polish Nannies.

Local Hamilton product Kevin Toft, was Ted's go to guy, filling in literally on a moments notice if there was a cancellation; says that he performed either in that role or as a scheduled act twenty seven times or more and was deeply affected by Ted's death. "This hit me hard; I really liked that guy," he said before a recent gig in Titusville, NJ. "I met Ted when he first started at Cedar. I went in looking for a gig and he asked me if I had a CD. I gave him a disc and he called me an hour later and said, "You're in!" Over the next few years I played there twenty seven times or more. Ted changed my life by introducing me to some of the best musicians anywhere; love ya' Ted."

Ted Zegarski touched many people, one of which was long time blues man and well respected guitarist Paul Plumeri who reflected and urged all to attend of possible says, "Ted was a true supporter and fan of the Trenton music scene. Many of us will be there this Sunday at the Ivy to pay a musical tribute; I wish all of you will come and join us."

Event organizer Jessica Paris who, along with her band mates were close to Ted, said it best when she offered up this statement, "When we got together to plan this event we said it was for Teddy. But it's really for us, all the people he left behind. "We want to fill the Ivy with music and love so we can remember Ted how he should remembered. He helped and supported so many local musicians and there's nothing that we could do to give him the honor he deserves, but we're sure gonna try on Sunday. His mom says "He was gem" and I couldn't have said it better myself."
