(UNION, NJ) -- Travel through the centuries and defy the boundaries of love, gender, and time with Orlando, a new play based on Virginia Woolf's gender-hopping novel Orlando: A Biography and presented by Kean University's Theatre Conservatory. The play, adapted by Sarah Ruhl, runs February 17-25 in the Zella Fry Theatre.
The play starts in the late 16th century, where Queen Elizabeth I falls in love with the beauty of Orlando, a lovely boy of 16 who never ages and never dies. He, in turn, falls passionately in love with an aristocratic Russian girl who appears to be a handsome boy. But love is fleeting, especially so as Orlando never ages and never dies. To complicate matters, romantic and otherwise, one fine morning in 17th century Constantinople, Orlando awakes to discover that he has become a she and must now adjust to living life as a woman– living and loving through the 18th to the 20th centuries. Our hero turned heroine seeks three not-so-simple things: love, the completion of her long poetic homage to an oak tree, and the meaning of life.
Performances are at: Friday, Feb. 17 at 8:00pm; Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8:00pm; Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2:00pm; Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 8:00pm; Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:00pm; Friday, Feb. 24 at 8:00pm; and Saturday, Feb. 25 at 2:00pm & 8:00pm.
