Dreamcatcher Presents NJ Premiere of "The Pursuit Of Happiness"

originally published: 10/14/2009

(SOUTH ORANGE, NJ) -- DREAMCATCHER REPERTORY THEATRE, professional Theatre in Residence at the Baird Center in South Orange, will present the New Jersey premiere of Richard Dresser's THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS from October 30 through November 15. This comedy is a part of playwright Dresser's trilogy about happiness in America, which also includes AUGUSTA (produced at Playwrights' Theatre in Madison last season) and A VIEW OF THE HARBOR. Each play in the trilogy is set in a different social class, and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS is Dresser's take on a middle-class family whose sole ambition is the success of their high-achieving daughter.

When Jodi, a high school senior, abruptly decides that she does not want to go to college, Annie and Neil see their carefully crafted script for her life crumble before their eyes. At the same time, they realize that they have placed all their own hopes and dreams on their daughter's shoulders and now must reconsider what will make them happy. Spud Ketchum, an old friend and now an admissions officer at Annie's alma mater, enters the picture as does Tucker Nugent, a self-appointed "friend of the family". Together, they muddle through to find a new path to their own redefined and more authentic happiness.

"THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS is a slice of life that rings true, while also being really funny," wrote BroadwayWorld.com. Variety wrote, "Offers laughs and knowing nods, especially for baby boomers."

Dreamcatcher's cast features Resident Acting Company members Harry Patrick Christian (Montclair), Scott McGowan (Maplewood), David Miceli (NYC), and Harriett Trangucci (Summit). Completing the cast is Sarah Albano, a student at Drew University, appearing for the first time with Dreamcatcher. Artistic Director Laura Ekstrand (Livingston) directs, assisted by Stage Manager Erica Conrad (Montclair).

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS will run at Dreamcatcher from Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 15. Performances are Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $27 general admission, $22 for seniors, and $17 for students, with special rates for subscribers and groups.
