(NEWARK, NJ) -- Responding to the events of 2020 and celebrating a new season of health and renewal, Arts Ed Newark’s partnership of 100+ organizations and individuals will launch Self-Care Summer, a promotional push of free or low-cost local activities and events for youth, adults, families, and seniors in Newark centered on: artmaking, healing, and healthful living.
A variety of events, both virtual and in-person for families and individuals of all ages showcase the breadth and diverse range of summer offerings hosted by dozens of Newark’s favourite organizations including: Newark Museum of Art, Newark Public Library, NJSO, GlassRoots, Greater Newark Healthcare Coalition, among many others. Newarkers can find information on everything from Escape Rooms and scavenger hunts to dance lessons and outdoor movies.
The summer-long calendar will be coordinated and housed on the Arts Ed Newark website, and weekly e-blasts will highlight opportunities along with tips promoting self-care and wellness. Partnering organizations such as NJPAC, Newark School of the Arts, and the United Way of Greater Newark provided exciting giveaways like free camp classes, books and games - Check out the social media feeds for details on how to enter and win!
Timed to sync up with a reemergence back into “normalcy” and re-entering a sense of community, Arts Ed Newark imagines the arts as a conduit for wellness and togetherness. “We want people to know that Self-Care needn’t be equated with purchasing things. It can be a mindful moment or time spent together as a family. And what better way to begin to heal after the last 18 months than through art and art-making?” said Lauren Meehan, Director of Arts Ed Newark.
The launch intentionally coincides with Make Music Day, an international day of celebrating music in one’s own community, free and open to the public. Held on the same day in more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries, Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part. The shared sense of access and equity-setting is perfectly aligned with the mission of Arts Ed Newark.
Arts Ed Newark is an alliance of and for arts education champions. As a group, we advocate for high-quality arts ed equity for the whole city. We combine our voices from different sectors to demonstrate the connection between the arts and positive vision for Newark.
