Jonathan Francis, of former NJ punk band The Moms (Bar/None Records) has released his newest tune “Borrowed Song” on December 14, 2020. It is the second release in a series of covers and originals recorded at Little Eden in Asbury Park, by Pete Steinkopf of the Bouncing Souls. Along with Francis’ previous release “Tear the Fascists Down” these songs are the first two tracks off the EP collection. With more tunes on the way and a full length LP featuring Francis’ new band, The Anxiety Society, planned for a 2021 release, these solo tracks are just the beginning.
Francis started developing the new project in 2018 while staying across town at The Albatross Hotel in Ocean Grove. Taking a collection of new songs that he had been developing over the past few years while living in the seasonally depressed city by the sea, Francis took The Moms’ recent breakup and the Fire Marshall condemning his apartment to mean it was time for something new. Along with the help of his brother and long time music partner Matthew Stolpe (The Moms, MakeWar), the sound started to come alive with Steinkopf’s guidance and some Little Eden magic.
“Borrowed Song is about just leaning into some tunes when everything else seems fucked. You know, turning it up and letting the sounds soak up your sorrows. It’s an ode to all the songs that came before it, all the songs that helped this song become this song, all those songs that help you through when you need them to, or at least make you feel better for a few minutes.” remarks Francis, who hopes the tune can shine a little light at the end of an extra shitty year.
