Heart Warming and Melodic: "Last Days of Summer" at George Street Playhouse

By Karen Nowosad

A Review: George Street Playhouse opens its new season and their new home venue with a new musical titled Last Days of Summer. This show is a total heart warmer and one that is sure to be an audience favorite. It is a well told story with appealing characters, some familiar moments in time and fabulous music that reflects the era. The story centers around the idea that the bonds which people lovingly develop between each other stay with them throughout their lifetime and even after death.

If it weren’t for those guys from New Jersey … “Beautiful,” the Tony-nominated hit about iconic singer-songwriter Carole King, ended its six-year residence on Broadway this past Sunday, and did so with a stamp on the record books. It closed as the 27th longest-running musical in Broadway history and ranks second among biographical shows about actual people. The only one above it: “Jersey Boys,” about Frankie Valli and his Four Seasons.

By Bob Makin

Daughter Vision are a fun and fascinating mix of the theatrical glam of David Bowie, the art rock of Laurie Anderson, and the synth pop of Kraftwerk and Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode, Yaz and Erasure. If Robert Smith from The Cure and Siouxsie Sioux were married by Paul Jourgensen of Ministry, Daughter Vision would make the perfect wedding band.

Kathy Najimy at MPAC in Morristown

By Cheryl Makin

She put a spell on the Mayo Performing Arts Center and they were hers…Kathy Najimy held the audience entranced with her personal take on the “Hocus Pocus” experience Oct. 26. For about an hour, the almost full house listened to Najimy recount tales of her co-stars – in particular Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker - on the set of the 1993 movie. The witty Najimy also delved into her days as a child “creating her own fun” making up skits and shows in her San Diego backyard, often singing her idol and future co-star Bette Midler’s songs. Then she chatted about being an up and coming actress and self-confessed “crazy, sycophant rabid fan” and “Bette Midler stalker” before she got her break with “Soapdish” in 1991. The next year, Najimy hit it big with “Sister Act” in 1992 - which she auditioned for five times.
