(HAMMONTON, NJ) -- Long-known as the “Blueberry Capital of the World” and recognized during a Presidential visit by Ronald Reagan as such, Hammonton will drop a giant, lit blueberry-colored ball at midnight on New Year’s Eve. This will be the first-ever cultivated blueberry drop in the national history of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The “Blueberry Drop” will take place as part of the inaugural Hammonton New Year’s Eve Bash on Sunday, December 31st from 10:00pm to 12:30am in Downtown Hammonton. The free outdoor event will be held in front of Hammonton Town Hall, located at 100 Central Avenue.

MainStreet Hammonton is producing the event in cooperation with Eagle Theatre, Spellcaster Productions and Kathedral Event Center. Sponsors and supporters include Miller Farms, LLC, Yoos Tree Service, 80 South Productions, Bri-Video, Town of Hammonton and Hammonton Police Department. The event will be held annually and there are already plans to expand it next year and in the years ahead.

“What are you doing New Year’s Eve? Grab your friends, a bite to eat, a drink, and let us take care of the rest. Enjoy Hammonton’s top-rated restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries, followed by ringing in the New Year Downtown,” MainStreet Hammonton Executive Director Cassie Iacovelli said.

Covert Pop, one of the tri-state area’s most popular party bands, will entertain guests with a free outdoor concert. Fire spinners will twirl and juggle fire during free live performances throughout the night. The band and fire spinners will kick off the celebration on a stage in front of Hammonton Town Hall at 10:30pm through midnight. Cocktail and dining specials will be offered at restaurants, bars, wineries and breweries throughout the greater Hammonton area.

Free party hats, noisemakers and sparklers will be given to the first 300 guests. When the town clock strikes midnight, a giant blueberry will drop from high above the festivities and signal the official start of 2018. The blueberry is more than 10 feet in diameter, and is almost as large as the famous ball dropped in New York City’s Time Square. Due to the extreme cold, the inside of Town Hall will be opened to guests as a warming station.
