Rock On! This Week

“No, I believe we played there a few years ago," began the creative juggernaut that is Karla Bonoff as she discussed her upcoming November 11 appearance at the New Hope Winery"I'll have one musician with me, Nina Gerber who's quite well known on the west coast; she's a great guitar player and she goes back to playing with Kate Wolf when she was quite young, she's wonderful and a lot of people do know of her."

Karla Bonoff has been writing songs since her teens and has had great success with her material; both on her own and through others. Her songs have been recorded by luminaries such as Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt, Wynona Judd and Linda Ronstadt, whose album "Hasten Down the Wind" includes three of her works. Bonoff has also leant her voice to the soundtrack of the movie "Footloose," as she was the lead vocal on the song, "Somebody's Eyes."

So, as a songwriter, the world has been treated to Karla's talents for decades and the aforementioned list of artists who have covered her material is just the tip of the iceberg but for many artists such success can also be frustrating as well as thrilling; even causing internal conflict as to which songs to giveaway if they are fortunate enough to have someone come calling. Bonoff says that there maybe a misconception in play about her songwriting "For" others.

“Unfortunately, I think there is a lot of misinformation out there about me writing for other people. I really never wrote those for anyone else I wrote those for me. All of those songs were written for me and then when these people would ask for songs I would just go; well how about this one? So, you know, I was making my own record at the same time that Linda Ronstadt recorded some of my songs so I've been just sharing songs that I wrote for myself pretty much anyway and that was a conscious choice. I could have held them back I suppose but I was an unknown songwriter making my first record and Linda was really successful; for me it was no choice but to let her have the song and she was an incredible singer who brought me a lot of recognition.”

“You know, there was no conflict," she went on, "Not the way that it's come down in the past because like I said, mostly when Bonnie Raitt or Linda Ronstadt cut my songs, I was a nobody so, the decision was easy and I was trying to get ahead. I've been working on this since I was 15 so, there was no guarantee that my solo career was going to do anything and so for me it was super exciting; I didn't have to have a day job anymore. I mean there's just so many benefits to letting real successful artists do your song. Really, it's just the way that it all worked out and it was really never a question; no.”

As is the case with any successful career; be it in the arts or any other vocation, the journey has its peaks and valleys and for those who have the wherewithal to stay the course and persevere, well, what goes around comes around.

“Oh, my career, it has been up and down obviously. I've been doing this for 40 years or more and there were times where things were smooth and easy and times where songwriters weren't so fashionable and we weren't able to get record deals but I mean all in all I would say I've been really fortunate that I've been able to make my living doing this since I was a teenager and that I've been able to just continue to do it and travel and play live for people and you know, there were years without record deals or certainly some harder times in the 80s where sort of English techno music kind of took over and it was not as good a time for me but it all comes back around and I think I have a faithful audience and they’re still happy that we're out there playing and excited that they can still come see us.”

Ah yes, the audiences, Karla continues to bring them out in droves as she plays to packed or sold-out venues every time she goes on the road. This current run, albeit a short one, is a precursor to more.

“We're just going to be out for about a week. I think we start out in Chicago and then kind of work our way back east; it's about seven or eight dates just in the first part of November. I’ve got some holiday shows starting in December with Livingston Taylor and we will be back through your neighborhood too for some of those but right now I think we're just promoting this New Hope Winery show; the shows last around 90 minutes so, like an hour and a half to two hours pretty much. We just put out a holiday album last year; it's called “Silent Night” so that's relatively new but you know I'm always touring, so we're just touring when we can and that doesn't necessarily mean it is for a new album; sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.”

Staying along those lines; what can we expect in an intimate venue such as the New Hope Winery?

“So, it's pretty acoustic it's pretty unplugged; you know? I play guitar and piano she plays guitar so it's all songs from my first album all the way up through now and kind of just an acoustic show.”

Often, record companies find talent and attempt to mold them into what they feel will garner success even if it is a departure from what they are as artists; Bonoff experienced this herself in an earlier project involving two men and two women but remember, "Perseverance?" Bonoff did back then but readily admits that now today is a different world.

“Well, I put out my own stuff now," she began slowly,  "I can go to my friend's house and we can produce a record and put it out on our own label and it makes a lot more sense at that level to do that. I mean, even if a record company was to sign me, they would take a huge piece of everything. So, it's just a different industry now and I’m self-financed and it's just a little business and I think that's really a good thing actually. It's just a different industry; I guess if you're in your twenties or you're Billie Eilish or somebody like that, the record company can do a lot for you; if you can be at that level. I guess, I don't even know anything about her record deal but if you know someone that's willing to spend a half-million dollars promoting your album; I'm just not in that world.”

Very true, she's, "Not in that world" and as more and more independent labels make headway in the industry things can get crowded. Does Bonoff have any advice for those trying to make it in the industry today?

“That’s tough because it's such a different industry; for us it was important to be able to go out and play live and learn our instrument and play in front of people. I still think people should be doing that even though they can just kind of make records in the studio and never really learn how to play a song all the way through. We just couldn't do that, in order to get signed to a label someone had to hear us play somewhere. I think a lot of these kids can put together a record and then; what happens when they have to go out and perform it? I still think that people, in order to be a whole artist, you need to be able to stand up and play an instrument and sing your songs.”

He's been a member of Buffalo Springfield and would go on to form the band Poco and then Loggins & Messina with Kenny Loggins.
