(GLASSBORO, NJ) -- Soprano Jessica Gould and lutenist Nigel North share the stage for a guest artist recital presented by the College of Performing Arts at Rowan University on March 27 at 8:00pm in Boyd Recital Hall on the Glassboro campus. Gould and North’s program, entitled Chiaroscuro: Music from the Dawn of the Seicento, includes sacred and secular works by Giulio Caccini, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Vincenzo Galilei, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger, Tarquinio Merula, Alessandro Piccinini, Luigi Rossi, Giovanni Felice Sances, Barbara Strozzi, and others from the early 17th century.
Gould has performed around the world, making solo appearances with the Cassatt Quartet at the Guggenheim Museum Works & Process Series, the Clarion Society, and the Four Nations Ensemble, among others in the United States and abroad, most notably throughout Italy. She has offered recitals of early music as part of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Faculty Concert Series and the Sorbonne recital series at Villa Finaly in Florence. Her recordings for MV Cremona include I Viaggi di Caravaggio and I Diletti di Mazzarino, in addition to projects with New World Records, Naxos, Da Vinci Classics, and Centaur.
North is a soloist, teacher, accompanist, director, and writer. Among his numerous achievements is the four-volume CD collection, Bach on the Lute, on the Linn Records label (now available as a box set). North formed the ensemble Romanesca with Andrew Manze (violin) and John Toll (harpsichord and organ) and, for 10 years, the group explored, performed, and recorded 17th century chamber music, earing several international awards for their recordings. His other recording projects have included Robert Dowland’s A Musical Banquet with soprano Monika Mauch for ECM, Lute Songs with tenor Charles Daniels for ATMA, and the Lute Music of Robert Johnson for Naxos.
