(TEANECK, NJ) -- Richard Barone's latest album, "Sorrows & Promises: Greenwich Village in the 1960s" took at look at some of the greatest songwriters of the legendary Greenville Village music scene. He shares those songs and stories at Mexicali Live in Teaneck on Thursday, July 13 at 8:00pm (Doors at 6:00pm). Richard will perform music from “Sorrows & Promises” along with songs from his solo and Bongos catalogs, and will be joined by Colin Gilmore who will open the show, long-time accompanist Nick Celeste, and more. Tickets are $15.
“Sorrows & Promises” is a loving tribute to the origins of the singer/songwriter movement. In the 1960’s, NYC’s Greenwich Village, where Barone lives, was the epicenter of a revolution in the history of American music. A new wave of writers and performers, inspired by the folk revival of the late fifties, created introspective, socially-aware, deeply personal songs that deserve to be considered as a key part of the American Songbook alongside the pop songs being written uptown. These writers – Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, Richard Fariña, Fred Neil and Phil Ochs, to name just a few – changed the “folk” repertoire from traditional songs to songs sprung from personal, contemporary experience. This freewheeling evening pays tribute to that exciting era, exploring the lasting legacy of artists and songs that still resonate today.
Richard Barone is an acclaimed recording artist, performer, producer, and author. Since pioneering the indie rock scene in Hoboken, NJ as frontman for The Bongos, Barone has produced countless studio recordings and worked with artists in every musical genre. He has recently collaborated with Tony Visconti, Beach Boy Al Jardine, Sean Lennon, Dion, John Sebastian, Alejandro Escovedo, Jill Sobule, and Donovan, as well as Moby, the late Lou Reed, and American folk icon Pete Seeger. He has scored shows and staged all-star concert events at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, and the SXSW Music Festival. His memoir Frontman: Surviving The Rock Star Myth was published by Hal Leonard Books. His latest album “Sorrows & Promises” celebrates the early 1960s music scene of Greenwich Village. He is affiliated with the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University.
Colin Gilmore grew up in Lubbock, Texas, spending many nights as a child in nightclubs like Stubbs, where he witnessed songwriters like Joe Ely, Terry Allen, and his own father, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, bring the stage to life. He developed a taste for Buddy Holly, Townes Van Zandt, and bands like The Clash and The Pogues. For 14 years, Colin has been informed by these observations, writing songs and playing under his own name. Recently, he was selected to participate in an artist residency at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, where he wrote his latest material. He recently performed at several events at SXSW in Austin, including with Richard Barone in his "Sorrows & Promises" album showcase, and tours in the US, Japan and Italy.
