Radio Shows That Feature Jersey Artists, Introduce New Music, And Defend The 80s

(BELMAR, NJ) -- In addition to publishing features and news about the arts in the Garden State, New Jersey Stage also runs ThePenguinRocks.com - an online site geared towards music that includes content from around the world and several recorded radio shows. Lee Mrowicki, the longtime DJ at The Stone Pony brings you "Radio Jersey" and "Beyond the Palace" - two shows with a New Jersey premise.  Danny Coleman, who writes the weekly "Rock On" column for New Jersey Stage, has his Rock on Radio show here each week as well. Mike Marrone, Sean Carolan, and Matt Barker have shows largely based on presenting new music.  And Gary Wien, the publisher of New Jersey Stage, has three different shows - one on Jersey music, one on new music, and one on the '80s.

Wien, who published the first book on the history of Asbury Music (Beyond the Palace) in 2003 and gave his picks for the Top 100 Albums by New Jersey Artists in 2001-2010, offers a unique look at New Jersey music with "Classic Jersey".  It's a show that blends tunes from some of the biggest stars to come from New Jersey with those just starting out or long since forgotten.

"This is a special marathon edition of Classic Jersey," explained Gary Wien. "It's a 'then & now"'look at about 40 artists with a track from early in their career and one released within the last 5-6 years. In many cases, there is a recent release from this year or last. The artists in this playlist are largely ones I've interviewed from my Beyond the Palace book to Upstage Magazine and New Jersey Stage. I have no idea why I do things like this, but it was a blast going through the archives to come up with the show."

Artists in Classic Jersey: Episode 12 include Mister Reality, Williams Honor, Bruce Springsteen, James Deely & the Valiants, Anthony D'Amato, Red House, Bruce Tunkel, Mimi Cross, Val Emmich, Bob Burger, The Weeklings, Glen Burtnik, Christine Martucci, Whirling Dervishes, Dramarama, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, Dipsomaniacs, The Successful Failures, Rick Barry, Linda Chorney, Jon Caspi, Jon Caspi & the First Gun, The Gaslight Anthem, Brian Fallon, The Commons, Keith Monacchio, George Wirth, Arlan Feiles, Well of Souls, Tom Kanach, Matt O'Ree, Bon Jovi, Michael Brett, The Milwaukees, Souls' Release, The Wag, Don Lee, Michael Patrick & the Suburban Hillbillies, Michael Patrick, Lisa Bouchelle, Lisa Bouchelle & the Bleu, James Dalton, Brian Fitzpatrick, Brian Fitzpatrick and the Band of Brothers, Tommy Strazza, Anthony Walker, Joe D'Urso and Stone Caravan, Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul, Nicole Atkins, Mike June & the Dirty Doves, Mike June, and Red Wanting Blue.

The complete Classic Jersey show is available as one 5 hour program.  It is also available in two parts, each roughly 2 1/2 hours long.  Part one is available here and part two is available here.

His new music show is called "Lighty's Corner" and largely features songs released within the past few months with a few cuts from throughout the years sprinkled in between. There are a lot of artists from the New Jersey / New York area, but songs from around the world as well - often indie artists you won't hear anywhere else.

Episode 12 contains tracks by The Two Man Travelling Medicine Show, The Successful Failures, Mimi Cross, Willie Nile, Val Emmich, Jack Skuller, The Leylines, James Deely, The Alarm, Don Lee, Fantastic Cat, Cranston Dean, David & David, Mick Smith, Snez, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, Bruce Tunkel, Go-Go's, TOIGO, Tiny Fighter, Joe Pesci, The Orphan's Project, Bombardier Jones, Skating Polly - Hollywood Factory, Sonofdov, Stay For Tomorrow, Jonas Carping, Lisa Bouchelle & The Bleu, and Bruce Springsteen.

"The final show of mine is called Bring Me The Head of Max Headroom and it features rock music from the 1980s," explained Wien.  "The 80s always gets a bad rap from many music fans, but there was a lot of great music created then. I figure someone needs to defend 80s rock and it might has well be me. If you were someone who grew up with MTV and the dawn of college rock / alternative rock, you'll probably enjoy the show.  I try to include some hits, some misses, some classic nuggets and obscure tracks in each episode."

Bring Me The Head of Max Headroom: Episode 12 contains tracks by Scandal, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cult, The Replacements, The Gregg Allman Band, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Clash, Crowded House, The Connells, The Hooters, The Waterboys, Violent Femmes, Kate Bush, U2, R.E.M., XTC, The Call, Firetown, The Smiths, Tonio K., The Romantics, Joe Jackson, The Psychedelic Furs, Flesh for Lulu, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Alarm, INXS, Jules Shear, Traveling Wilburys, The Police, and Peter Gabriel.
