Premiere Stages to Present New Jersey Premiere of Pulitzer Prize Winner Water by the Spoonful

originally published: 06/27/2016

Premiere Stages to Present New Jersey Premiere of Pulitzer Prize Winner Water by the Spoonful (UNION, NJ) -- Quiara Alegría Hudes’ hauntingly beautiful Pulitzer Prize-winning play Water by the Spoonful is set to have its New Jersey Premiere at Premiere Stages, the professional Equity Theatre at Kean University. In this stirring portrait of redemption and forgiveness, Elliot, an Iraq War vet, and his cousin Yazmin, a recent divorcee, search for a way out from the shadows, while Odessa, Elliot's estranged mother, struggles to keep her new online family of fellow addicts stable and sober. As the fractured family negotiates the limitations of loyalty, friendship, and community, they also discover acceptance and grace in a play The New York Times heralded as a “moving collage of lives in crisis” when it premiered in New York at Second Stage Theatre in 2013.

Premiere’s production, helmed by director Kel Haney, will feature an accomplished professional company of actors, including Zack Calhoon, Sean Carvajal, Zuleyma Guevara, Kana Hatakeyama, Ethan Hova, Jamil A. C. Mangan, and Emma Ramos.

A native of West Philadelphia, playwright Quiara Alegría Hudes previously collaborated with Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda on the Broadway musical In the Heights, which received the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, garnered Ms. Hudes a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical, and was a 2009 Pulitzer Prize finalist. Water by the Spoonful, the recipient of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, is the second play in Ms. Hudes’ acclaimed “Elliot trilogy,” which also includes Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue (a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), and The Happiest Song Plays Last. Her other works include the plays 26 Miles and Yemaya’s Belly and the children’s musical Barrio Grrrl!

Director Kel Haney previously collaborated with Premiere on last season’s Great Kills by Kate Cortesi, and the 2013/2014 Liberty Live Commission, James Christy’s At Liberty Hall. Her recent directing credits include Comfort/Haney’s The Elephant in Every Room I Enter (La MaMa, Mabou Mines), Jonathan Caren’s The Recommendation (The Flea), Melisa Annis’ United Front (Primary Stages/Fordham), Gardiner Comfort’s You’re Not Tough (HERE, Dixon Place), David Auburn’s Fifth Planet (Lincoln Center), Jessica Dickey’s Row After Row, Rachel Bonds’ Little Rock (both at Williamstown Theatre Festival), and Nathan Leigh & Kyle Jarrow’s musical, The Consequences (Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre). Kel is a former Manhattan Theatre Club Directing Fellow and member of Ensemble Studio Theatre.

The impressive cast includes Zack Calhoon, recently seen in Dancing Lessons at the Kitchen Theatre Company and Geva Theatre Center; Sean Carvajal, who appeared in the Studio Theatre’s Washington, D.C. Premiere of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Pulitzer Prize winner, Between Riverside and Crazy; Zuleyma Guevara, whose recent stage credits include Clubbed Thumb, INTAR, Columbia Stages, and the Downtown Urban Theater Festival; Kana Hatakeyama, featured as Murasaki on the Netflix hit series, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”; Ethan Hova, an Ensemble Studio Theatre member whose distinguished regional credits include D.C.’s Woolly Mammoth and Pittsburgh’s Kinetic Theatre; Jamil A. C. Mangan, returning to Premiere Stages after his winning turn in Tammy Ryan’s Primus Prize-winner, Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods; and Emma Ramos, whose New York credits include the New York Theatre Workshop, Cherry Lane Theatre, Signature Theatre Company, Soho Rep and SummerStage.

“We are proud to present this important and fiercely contemporary play to New Jersey audiences for the first time,” stated John J. Wooten, producing artistic director of Premiere Stages. “Opioid dependency has become an epidemic in the state, and Quiara’s characters are uniquely compelling in their ability to challenge and inspire us to take a fresh perspective on the increasingly significant issue of addiction.”

Audience members are invited to further engage with the issues raised by Ms. Hudes’ thought-provoking play through Premiere Stages’ 2016 Talk-Back Series, which offers free post-show discussions with community leaders and local experts after select matinee performances. The theatre’s first talk-back, focusing on Recovery & Education (Sunday, July 17 at 3:00 pm), will feature Sabrina Sabater, Recovery Counselor, and Morgan Thompson, Recovery Mentor/Outreach Coordinator,  for the Raymond J. Lesniak ESH Recovery High School in residence at Kean University, as well as Christopher Freeman, Community Recovery Supervisor for The College of New Jersey. Additional topics and dates include Water by the Spoonful in Rehearsal & Performance with Ms. Haney (Sunday, July 24 at 3:00 pm), and Technology & Community Building (Saturday, July 30 at 3:00 p.m.) with Dr. Mary Chayko, Director of Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies at Rutgers University’s School of Communication and Information. Premiere will also offer a series of informal pre-show talks every Saturday evening 45 minutes prior to performance in the lobby of the theatre.

Water by the Spoonful runs July 14-31 in the Zella Fry Theatre on the Kean University main campus in Union, NJ. Days/times: Thursdays and Fridays at 8:00 pm, Saturdays at 3:00 and 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 3:00 pm.  Tickets are $30 standard, $20 for senior citizens and Kean alumni, and $15 for students and patrons with disabilities.
