Jay Siegel and The Tokens and Shirley Alston Reeves to Perform at Axelrod PAC!

Fans of 1960's music will have an opportunity to hear an evening filled with classic tunes performed by the original artists when Jay Seigel’s Tokens and Shirley Alston Reeves take the stage at Deal’s stunning Axelrod Performing Arts Center on Wed, June 28 at 8pm!

Jay Siegel and The Tokens are best known for several great 60’s tunes including “Tonight I Fell in Love,” “Portrait of My Love,” and “I Hear Trumpets Blow.

In addition to singing with The Tokens, Seigel also enjoyed a successful career as a music producer over the years with records including The Happenings’ “See You In September” and The Chiffons’ “One Fine Day.”

When Seigel was a teenager growing up in Brighton Beach, NY, he and his friends would spend their summers singing doo-wop in neighborhood harmony groups. At the age of 16, he and his buddies happened to hit upon a version of a traditional song which they could perform so well it would enable them to impress all the other vocal groups but, most importantly, would enable him and the boys in his group to “get all the girls.”

Six years later, Seigel and the Tokens released a recording of this song which, in 1961, went on to reach #1 in countries all over the world, and also became a worldwide hit again 40 years later after being featured in Disney’s film, The Lion King.

The song?

“The Lion Sleeps Tonight!” — a tune they will perform live at Axelrod PAC on June 28!

Also on the bill with Jay Seigel’s Tokens will be Shirley Alston Reeves.

Reeves, from Passaic, NJ, is a 1996 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. As the lead singer of The Shirelles, she had a career filled with many hit records including “Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This,” “Baby It’s You,” and a song she wrote, “Tonight’s the Night,” a 1960 Shirelles hit listed by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest songs of all time.

Alston Reeves’ namesame group — The Shirelles — is also famous for several other smash hits including Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s 1961 #1 hit, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, in addition to the group’s 1962 #1 smash, “Soldier Boy.”

Come out and relive the sounds of the 60s live at the Jersey Shore with a magical night of music provided by Jay Seigel’s Tokens and Shirley Alston Reeves!
